    Client Cleanup: 2020 Recap & What's Ahead

    Client_Blog_Header_v2.jpg

    Here's the most recent dev blog on the client cleanup initiative - "We’re recapping 2020's progress and going over plans for 2021."

    "We've made a commitment to share recurring updates on the work we're doing to improve the performance and reliability of the League Client.
    Today's update is the sixth blog in the series. (See the first, the second, the third, fourth, and fifth here.)
    TL;DR: We spent 2020 improving client start up time, architecture, champ select, end of game, memory leaks / client crashes and bug-fixing. We're in the middle of planning for Q1 2021, with a core focus on improving the social panel and continuing to improve the overall stability of the client.
    2020 Recap
    Our team formed late in 2019, and a lot of our early work was going through the process of understanding the state of the League Client. As a part of that process, we decided to focus on which parts of the client players globally (all of you!) were most vocal about to determine what we work on to make the client better. We still have work to do, but looking back at 2020, we were able to make meaningful improvements to the Client.
    • Launched our global client player survey, which we use to determine what to work on. Most accomplishments you see below are a result of what players wanted to see addressed.
    • We got client bootstrap (startup) time down to 16 seconds for 90 percent of players globally (from 29.5 seconds at the start of 2020).
      • This was accomplished by architecture work, including a 63% reduction in bootstrap ember apps (ones that load on client start-up), and a 57% reduction in plugins within the client. In other words, we cleaned up a bunch of code.
    • Improved the responsiveness and reliability of champ select when picking and banning champions
      • Fixed performance issues while filtering through champions, and made improvements to the champ select grid itself
      • Investigated the usage of certain features in Champ Select. We'll talk more about this below.
      • Improved time to lock-in & ban champions
      • Fixed memory leaks in and around Champ Select (highlighted below)
    • Addressed the client completely freezing and black-screening when players return to it via the End of Game (EOG) flow after a game ends
    • Addressed the client hanging on the ‘Reconnect’ button during EOG, when it shouldn't have showed up at all
    • 175 bugs fixed in 2020, ranging from small stuff to issues that've been around forever.
      • Player names showing as “...” in chat
      • Taskbar not lighting up when receiving a message in chat
      • New players missing the Social Panel
      • Settings resetting when a player logs on from a different computer
      • Gift notifications repeating on login
      • Players returning to a black home screen after various actions in the client
    • Improved responsiveness of the Collections tab and each of its sub-sections
    • Reduced the Runes tab loading time by 40%, made the Runes interface smoother and more reliable to use
    • Addressed 30 memory leaks across the client. This is a particularly difficult area we discovered later in the year so we're especially happy we were able to ship improvements before the holidays.
      • Memory leaks are caused when a part of the program fails to release it’s memory after completing a task. This leaves less overall memory for other programs running on the system. The compounding results are always bad, but the causes are notoriously difficult to pin down, especially in large applications.
      • Prior to our first memory leak fixes in 10.23, players in Riot regions experienced 193,000 out-of-memory crashes each patch. By the last patch of 2020, patch 10.25, we saw a 55% drop in these crashes!
    As we mentioned, we used your responses to the global client survey to guide decisions on where to focus our efforts. The above improvements represent progress in the areas you were most vocal about, but ultimately this only matters if you all feel things are moving in the right direction. That's why we're happy to report that, in addition to game-based metrics, we've seen positive survey trends across the board, meaning more and more players are feeling a less frustrating client experience!
    ...Less frustrating. We still have a lot of things to accomplish this year, and we'll continue to provide updates.
    Low-Use Champ Select features
    If you had a chance to read our previous post, we mentioned we were investigating removing some low-use Champ Select features to improve overall performance. After evaluating favorites, missions, and emotes, we decided against removing any of them and will instead work on optimizing them. We've already fixed an issue with emotes, and are currently working on making sure favorites and missions are working as expected.
    What’s on deck
    We're currently finishing up planning for the first quarter of the year, but here's what we currently aim to address next for the League Client:
    Social Panel
    We've seen an uptick in issues regarding the social panel over the course of last year. In December, we fixed an issue where hovercards for friends in-game weren't displaying the game type or champion. Here are the next issues we plan to address:
    1. Social panel not connecting
    2. Friends list not loading, incorrect status being displayed, friends not populating
    3. Player won't be sent a friend request if their friend list is full
    4. Ranked information disappears from hovercard when a player is in a normal game
    5. Chat stutters when typing messages in quick succession
    6. Folders reorder themselves between sessions
    7. LoR and Valorant folders go missing when sorting by "Group Games & Servers"
    8. Clicking ‘Show Dates” in chat box will cause text boxes to overlap
    9. Friend Request notification only appears when the option is toggled off, and vice-versa
    We're also going to deprecate an old Javascript framework (more on JS in a sec) and move the social panel entirely to ember. That transition is a good opportunity to go through and clean up rough spots in the code, leading to more reliability and fewer bugs.
    Client Stability
    We're now going to introduce two new focus areas for improving League Client stability: Client crashes and Javascript errors, which can have any number of effects, including.... client crashes. Rather than focus on a specific portion of the client for this work (ex. champ select, client bootstrap), we're taking a broad approach across the client. Together with the stability work we were already prioritizing, here are the four different buckets:
    • Reducing crashes: In patch 10.25, players across 16 Riot regions experienced 2.2 million client crashes. After our initial investigation, it seems the best option for us to address the majority of crashes is to upgrade our version of Chromium. This is the web browser at the heart of the League Client's architecture.
    • Reducing Javascript errors: In Patch 10.25, players across 16 Riot Regions experienced 36 million Javascript (JS) errors in the client. While not all JS errors result in a crash or performance hit, even invisible errors can eventually stack up, leading to those bigger types of impacts. Driving this number down will lead to a range of benefits across the client.
    • Continue to fix memory leaks: Fixing some of these were a big win for us last year. We want to keep big-winning this year.
    • Continued architecture work to clean up our codebase: To upgrade Chromium as mentioned above, we have to complete a bunch of prerequisite work which, itself, will further improve client performance. We plan to complete this work and kick off a Chromium upgrade by the middle of the year or so.
      • The last time we updated Chromium was December 2019, a few months before the Client Cleanup Campaign kicked off. We saw good results from that upgrade (CTRL+F "Chromium") and we'll highlight the improvements that come with this next upgrade once we're closer to launching it.
    We appreciate the feedback we continually receive around the client, and we are listening! We had a good 2020, and are going to continue with the high momentum to improve the client for our players!"

    Ask Riot: Where's Rod of Ages?

    2_11_21_Ask_Riot_Banner_TF.jpg

    Here's this week's Ask Riot - "Why we removed some items in preseason, role strength throughout the game, and MMR.":

    "Welcome to Ask Riot

    Today we’re talking about items, MMR, and how we think about role strength throughout the game.
    Also, please send us all your questions! It’s the only thing that makes the editor smile.
    Why were some items removed in the new season? (i.e. Rod of Ages)
    While we try to avoid removing items that players love, sometimes they violate certain principles which require them to be either removed or reworked. Items in the new season were typically reworked or removed if:
    1. They violated game health principles for counterplay, like Hextech Gunblade as a point-and-click tool for assassins.
    2. They had overlapping purposes with other items, like Statikk Shiv being very similar to Hurricane.
    3. They were near-mandatory first purchases for certain champions in a way that couldn't be shifted to be more flexible, meaning they'd still end up restricting choice for those champions if turned into a Mythic item (Rod of Ages was a necessity for mana champions who needed health and wanted to scale; Hextech Gunblade’s sustain and hybrid AD/AP stats made it a requirement for many hybrid damage dealers).
    Despite being very, very gold efficient, Rod of Ages was only used by a handful of champions due to its stat profile (Anivia, Twisted Fate, Ryze, Singed, etc.). Notably, it left out manaless champions like Mordekaiser, Rumble, Akali, and others who’d be interested in a hybrid damage/durability/healing option. It was also too powerful for the champs who wanted it to consider other options.
    We actually tested several versions of Rod of Ages as a Mythic item, such as featuring a transformation mechanic and cool unique passive like Seraph's/Muramana. However, when balanced, users felt like they were irrelevant for too long while waiting for their Mythic item to scale, and it was a mandatory purchase for champions that wanted to scale (rather than a choice). This ultimately violated two of the principles for Mythic items that we were aiming for—satisfaction and choice.
    The Rod of Ages Mythic iterations eventually became Riftmaker, which opened up the healing/durability niche for manaless champions. Mana users looking to prioritize survival should be able to situationally purchase Everfrost, although that item has been underpowered and is receiving buffs in the next patch or two.

    PhRoXzOn, Game Designer, Summoners Rift Team

    Are there any plans for making the ladder system more transparent? The ELO and the MMR make it a bit difficult to understand.
    We’ve discussed this a few times, and the reasons we’ve stated still hold true today. MMR is basically the current estimation of your skill—and for it to be accurate, it will at times over or underestimate your abilities. If you’re only watching MMR, losses can feel like the game telling you you’re getting worse, when the truth is just that the system was intentionally testing you against tougher opponents and learning how to match you more accurately.
    By adapting MMR into Rank, players progress through the system via Tier and Division milestones that put more focus on long-term growth than the result of any one game in isolation. One isolated loss won't knock you out of a rank, and one isolated win won't promote you into the next—your performance over time is ultimately what impacts your displayed Rank. This system also lets us include things like demotion protection, which keeps you from being overly punished for a streak of losses at an unfortunate time.
    We’re going to keep working on ways to make both the Rank and MMR systems feel smooth and accurate, but we don’t want to make either system do a job it wasn’t designed to do.

    Riot IAmWalrus, Lead Competitive Gameplay Designer

    What is your goal for individual roles at various points in a match? Should roles have similar strength at all points of the match or should some be stronger? Would love to hear thoughts on what seems like the developers trying to let ADCs have a strength curve more aligned with other roles.
    The goal is for each role to feel like it can meaningfully change the outcome of a match. Due to the shape of the map (dragons spawn earlier and are bot, Baron spawns later and is top, mid lane can roam to other lanes, etc.), exact parity at all points in the game isn’t something we strive for. In fact, we think unique power curves are a good thing. Slight advantages and disadvantages in power at different times make for a wider range of decisions and strategic elements to consider.
    Likewise, different roles do and should index differently as to what kind of strengths they are bringing to a match. A support undoubtedly has less 1v1 combat power than a midlaner, but they often set the vision up for a battlefield and the utility in their kits becomes critically important as the game goes on. Put another way, they have less direct combat power so they get to index higher in strategic capabilities.
    In addition to having some variance in power between roles, we find power-over-time is a healthy way to diversify the feeling of our champion classes. For instance, Marksmen have some pretty clear distinctions between early game bullies (Draven, Caitlyn) and late game hyperscaling champions (Vayne, Kog’maw). This helps players pick a style they enjoy or one that fits the team they’re trying to create.
    For the Marksman item changes in preseason, we thought their late-game-skewed power curve was slightly too sharp. This led to situations where games ended before they could reach and make use of their power spike. So we changed Marksman items to allow them to spike earlier, which was more to match the reality of the games than to sync them with other roles. That directionally has seemed like an improvement, but we still intend to keep their power curve skewed toward late game overall.
    Riot Sotere, Senior Game Designer, Summoner’s Rift Team

    Miscellaneous

    • Riot Scruffy noted a change that went out in 11.3:

    "PSA - in 11.3 we added additional LP penalties for AFKing or leaving games. Repeatedly AFKing will ramp this penalty up over time.

    With a little more skin in the game, hopefully a potential leaver will think twice about ruining a game for their team.

    Leavers never prosper"

    • Reina Sweet also noted some bot AI changes that went out in 11.3:

    "One subtle change to LoL's Co-op vs AI that went out with 11.3:

    Bots are a little bit smarter. Bots will use new recommended items now. Which is a system that updates as people build differently.

    So, effectively, the bots are learning from you all. :)"

    • Riot KateyKhaos noted changes to Shan Hai Scrolls Neeko's recall coming with 11.4:

    "We’re working to unlink it to effects quality, so the sun should display regardless, so folks playing on lower settings can also enjoy it.

    Should be in for the next patch (11.4)!"

    • Here's Riot Tuxedo with some changes for the Match History API:

    [1] "Very very very excited to tease the next version of the League of Legends match history API. Bunch of cool stuff:

    * Calculated and assigned position

    * Spell cast counts

    * Objectives stolen counts

    * Turret plating event

    * Champion transform event (Kayne)

    More to come on this.

    [2] "Also shout out to the League team that's been working on this. I get to tease it, but they've been doing the hard work. 🙌🏼

    Our latest champion, Viego, released in 11.2, with his release skin and chromas for Lunar Beast Viego!

    Lunar Beast Viego

    "Former leader of a past Lunar Ox Squad, Viego decided that they would fight the Lunar Beast and actually defeat it. His plan ended in tragedy as he watched the rest of his squad be devoured-- including his wife. Viego has stewed in bitterness over these losses for years, blaming everyone but himself -- including this year's Lunar Ox Squad."

    2/3 Mid-Patch Update - Viego Q nerf & bugfixes

    doesanyonereadfilenamesanymore.jpg

    The Patch 11.3 notes have been updated with a Viego Q healing vs minions nerf and several bugfixes that have been pushed to live!

    "MID-PATCH UPDATES

    2/3/2021 Viego Balance Change and Fizz Bugfix

    Fizz

    • E - PLAYFUL/TRICKSTER BUGFIX: Fixed a bug where Fizz would be locked out of casting other abilities until he recast his E - Playful/Trickster

    Viego

    • Q - BLADE OF THE RUINED KING SECOND HIT HEALING VS. MINIONS : 150% ⇒ 100%
    • PASSIVE - SOVEREIGN'S DOMAIN TOGGLE ABILITIES BUGFIX: Viego no longer keeps Gragas' Q - Barrel Roll and Lux's E - Lucent Singularity abilities after having possessed them
    • PASSIVE - SOVEREIGN'S DOMAIN HECARIM BUGFIX: Fixed a bug where Viego would cast different, incorrect abilities after possessing Hecarim while his W - Spirit of Dead is active
    • TRANSCENDENCE BUGFIX: Fixed a bug where Viego would be granted additional permanent ability haste from Transcendence if he levels to 5, 8, or 11 during enemy champion possession"

    Over on twitter, RiotAugust noted:

    "We just micropatched a nerf to Viego’s solo lane

    Q

    Double attack healing on minions:: 150% >>>100%

    We’d still like lanes to be viable, but Mid Viego was looking a bit too strong.

    Jungle Viego has grown to 49% winrate. Will see if he keeps growing throughout patch."

    Riot Rovient also tweeted a Viego Eternals bugfix hotfix that also went out -

    [1] "Hey League players: we're aware of the Viego Eternals spam and are preparing a micropatch fix. Will have it out as soon as possible."

    [2] "UPDATE: Micropatch deployed successfully. Viego will no longer spam you with his Eternals Milestone pop-ups, whilst killing you over and over in your own jungle. We only removed the Milestone spam. You'll still have to deal with Viego taking your camps in your own way"

    Miscellaneous

    "It's the first Riot Report of 2021! Learn about all the Lunar Beast events happening across multiple games, get the latest roadmaps from Legends of Runeterra and Wild Rift, and Jared Rosen joins the show once again to take all your lore questions about Viego, the ruined king.

    "Ranked reward emotes are starting to go out. Reminder that the Little Legend rewards are given out at the end of the full set."

    • KateyKhaos has tweeted a few changes for Withered Rose Syndra and Talon that didn't make it into 11.3 and should be going out in 11.4:

    Voting Results: Champion Update & Skin Thematic

    Vote_Results_Article_Header.jpg

    Check out the results in the VGU and skin thematic voting - "The votes are in! The thematic and VGU you chose are…"

    "We asked, you answered: Udyr and Crime City Nightmare are the winners of the Season 2021 polls!
    The First VGU of 2022
    The votes are in, and unlike the last VGU poll where we had two candidates extremely close, this time we have a landslide victory. The champion that won by a large margin was Udyr!

    2-1-21_VGU_Results.jpg

    Not only was he ahead by a lot when all the votes were combined, Udyr was also far ahead in every region individually as well. We have heard loud and clear that you all want to see Udyr brought up to modern champion standards, and that's just what we are going to do.
    Just like the last couple VGUs, we’ll be doing a few dev blogs to update all of you on the progress as we move along. We’ll start work on Udyr’s update soon and plan to have it ready for early 2022. Now let’s kick things off with a few words from some of the developers who will start to re-imagine Udyr for his big update!
    Stash “Stashu” Chelluck, Gameplay Designer: Udyr's unique kit hook excited me ever since I first started playing League, but he hasn't quite kept up his luster as the game evolved around him. I hope to do his classic stance-dancing motif justice by pushing the unique powers and playstyles of each stance while keeping him the heavy hitting, full-melee fighter that really slaps when he closes the gap.
    Justin “RiotEarp” Albers, Concept Artist: Udyr is one our oldest champions (2009?) and it's time he received his upgrade. He’s got tons of potential to be one of the coolest characters in the game, and I'm looking forward to exploring and figuring out what the best version of our bearded melee spirit shaman can be. There are lots of things with him that are already working and we can just embellish on those characteristics, namely his ancient, primal nature vibes, doing something really cool with those different stances, and making sure he feels right at home in the Freljord.

    2-1-21_Udyr_Sketch1.jpg

    Mary “a highwayman” Gumport, Narrative Lead: Udyr has such an untamed, deeply human core. We want to do that heart justice, so we’ll be digging into how our favorite shaman can keep wrestling with everything on his mind while more deeply connecting with the ferocity and spirit of the Freljord in his own unique way. The Narrative team on League has been thinking about him and his place in Runeterra for a while now, so I’m excited to finally give him the full attention he deserves.

    2-1-21_Udyr_Sketch2.jpg

    Rival Crews & An Insidious Underground

    For the skin thematic voting, we’re excited to announce that Crime City Nightmare has come out on top with quite the lead! Next up was Debonair 2.0 followed by Monster Tamers closely after. Crime City won by a landslide in every region except for China, where Debonair was slightly more popular.

    2-1-21_Thematic_Results_Global.jpg

    2-1-21_Thematic_Results_China.jpg

    We mentioned before that we’re open to launching more than one of these thematics depending on results, and we’ve seen a lot of enthusiasm for all three choices. So in 2021, you can expect to see both Crime City Nightmare and Debonair 2.0 hit the Rift, and we’ll continue thinking about Monster Tamers further down the line as well.
    We couldn’t be more excited to dig into deeper worldbuilding behind Crime City Nightmare and deliver a set of skins we hope you’ll love later this year. Right now we’re targeting Q3—so sometime between July and September—for their release and plan to give an update on progress around mid-year (without spoiling too much of the surprise!).
    Here’s what some folks on the thematic development team are most looking forward to:
    Karl “Riot LoveStrut” Abad, Thematic Development Producer: Fashionable crimelords making shady deals with Eldritch entities? What’s not to like? There’s a lot of exciting potential here to show a compelling horror-focused power fantasy that we haven’t explored yet. I can’t wait to see how our artists bring this eerie, sinister thematic to life. Hope we don’t go a little mad in the process...
    Jared “Carnival Knights” Rosen, Narrative Lead and Chief Demon Advocate: Old-school cosmic horror meets 1920s gangland crime syndicates? Are you kidding me?! That thirst for power! Those innumerable, nameless monsters tumbling out from darkened corners at the edges of creation, cutting dark bargains as they spread across the world! A nightmare in every shadow, every flickering neon sign and rusted street lamp! Oh, it’s all so... so beautiful.
    We wanted to send a big thank you from everyone on the skins and champion team for your excitement, feedback, and participation in this vote. It’s an awesome opportunity to connect with all of you as we gear up for everything we have in store in 2021."

    Standard_Patch_11_3_Notes_Banner.jpgCheck out the Patch 11.3 Notes:

    "Welcome to February and another big ol’ patch!

    This time around, we took a large sweep across items to tweak what's hitting too hard and what's needing some love, categorized into 5 sections: tank, enchanter, marksman, fighter, and sustain items. For sustain, we’re continuing to reassess systemic healing by adjusting stats around Omnivamp on powerful items like Goredrinker and Sterak’s Gage. The intent here is to balance the stat’s strength while keeping items viable and, you guessed it, sustainable.

    Then it’s the usual champ balancing, with some sizzle for Jinx, who’s been wanting to crash back onto the scene for a while now, and some more for AP Shyv. As for outliers, we’re tamping down champs like Rammus and Elise who have been consistent hot shots in the jungle.

    All that aside, ARURF is back and better than ever! We've made a few changes in light of the new item landscape, so take a quick peek below and get ultra ready. See ya in the next one.

    Party-goers galore, festivities continue in the TFT world with our first patch of the Festival of Beasts! Take this portal to TFT patch notes to uncover where the real party is at!

    Champions

    anivia.jpg

    Anivia

    Q detonation damage decreased. R cooldown increased later.

    Since her refresh in patch 10.25, Anivia's been leaving her enemies in the cold with high spell consistency and damage.

    Q - Flash Frost

    • DETONATION DAMAGE :: 70/105/140/175/210 (+50% AP) >>> 60/95/130/165/200 (+45% AP)

    R - Glacial Storm

    • COOLDOWN :: 4/2.5/1 seconds >>> 4/3/2 seconds

    cho.jpg

    Cho’Gath

    E base damage decreased later.

    With the last round of tank item buffs, Cho’s been feasting in top lane.

    E - Vorpal Spikes

    • BASE DAMAGE :: 22/37/52/67/82 >>> 22/34/46/58/70

    elise.jpg

    Elise

    Q base damage decreased later. W active attack speed decreased later.

    Elise has crept to the top of the jungle echelons despite some previous nerfs (see 11.2). We’re squashing her down a bit to even out the playing field.

    Q - Neurotoxin

    • BASE DAMAGE :: 40/75/110/145/180 >>> 40/70/100/130/160

    W - Skittering Frenzy

    • ACTIVE ATTACK SPEED :: 60/80/100/120/140% >>> 60/70/80/90/100%

    ezreal.jpg

    Ezreal

    Q damage ratio increased.

    Ezreal hasn’t been faring so well with the new item system. To give him more of a (mystic) shot, we’re buffing his Q ratio to better synergize with Muramana, while also giving him more value when building heavy AD items like Hydra.

    Q - Mystic Shot

    • DAMAGE RATIO :: 120% AD >>> 130% AD

    ivern.jpg

    Ivern

    Base health growth decreased. E shield decreased later.

    While it’s great to see Ivern wunder-ing around outside of his usual home, he's still too effective meandering around the jungle. We can’t beat around the bush any longer—we’re pulling back some of his safety and shielding power.

    Base Stats

    • HEALTH GROWTH :: 95 >>> 85

    E - Triggerseed

    • SHIELD :: 80/115/150/185/220 >>> 80/110/140/170/200

    jinx.jpg

    Jinx

    Base health decreased. Q bonus range increased; Fishbones bonus attack speed penalty decreased. E cost increased; arm time decreased; max range cast adjusted.

    The new item changes have not been kind to Jinx. We wanted to make some priority adjustments to the items in general first before tackling her, and now it's finally time. Additionally, since she's been primarily out of pro play for a while now, we're shifting some of her kit's power from raw stats to her abilities to create more room for skill expression.

    Base Stats

    • HEALTH :: 610 >>> 550

    Q - Switcheroo!

    • BONUS RANGE :: 75/100/125/150/175 >>> 100/125/150/175/200
    • FISHBONES BONUS ATTACK SPEED PENALTY :: -25% >>> -10%

    E - Flame Chompers!

    • COST :: 70 mana >>> 90 mana
    • ARM TIME :: 0.7 seconds >>> 0.5 seconds
    • [UPD] NO MORE FLAMING :: When casting Flame Chompers! farther than max range, it now casts to the max range instead of causing you to walk into range and then casting

    karma.jpg

    Karma

    Base mana regen increased. Q cost decreased.

    Bringing good karma to support Karma.

    Base Stats

    • MANA REGEN :: 11.5 >>> 13

    Q - Inner Flame

    • COST :: 65 mana >>> 55 mana

    morde.jpg

    Mordekaiser

    E cooldown decreased.

    Morde isn’t grasping the new season well, so we’re giving him more grasp. We’re hoping this along with other system changes (Riftmaker giving more health, AD bruiser items getting nerfed) will help him navigate this strange new world.

    E - Death’s Grasp

    • COOLDOWN :: 24/21/18/15/12 seconds >>> 22/19/16/13/10 seconds

    olaf.jpg

    Olaf

    Base health decreased. Passive bonus attack speed decreased; now displays amount of attack speed on passive icon.

    Olaf is dominating in the jungle. We’re nerfing his clear speed and dueling slightly so he’s a bit more dependent on finding successful ganks.

    Base Stats

    • HEALTH :: 597 >>> 575

    Passive - Berserker Rage

    • BONUS ATTACK SPEED :: 0-100% >>> 0-75%
    • [NEW] LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND :: The amount of attack speed being granted is now displayed on Olaf’s passive icon

    pantheon.jpg

    Pantheon

    Q now has decreased damage against both minions and monsters; cooldown increased early.

    Balancing out Pantheon’s power both in mid and the jungle.

    Q - Comet Spear

    • REDUCED DAMAGE AGAINST :: Minions >>> Minions and monsters
    • COOLDOWN :: 10/9.5/9/8.5/8 seconds >>> 13/11.75/10.5/9.25/8 seconds

    rammus.jpg

    Rammus

    E cooldown flattened.

    Rammus rolled comfortably into preseason and has gained more momentum with the cheaper tank Mythic items. We’re reducing some of his taunt power now that his engages have become more consistent.

    E - Frenzying Taunt

    • COOLDOWN :: 12/11.5/11/10.5/10 seconds >>> 12 seconds

    rell.png

    Rell

    W1 and W2 damage ratio increased. E damage ratio increased; unbind cooldown decreased; cooldown bug fixed; long distance pathing bug fixed. R damage ratio increased.

    So far so good for Rell, so no meaningful balance adjustments here. These changes are light usability work and bugfixes, sprinkled with a bit of love for the very-much-not-a-thing AP Rell builds.

    W - Ferromancy: Crash Down

    • DAMAGE RATIO :: 40% AP >>> 60% AP

    W - Ferromancy: Mount Up

    • DAMAGE RATIO :: 30% AP >>> 40% AP

    E - Attract and Repel

    • UNBIND COOLDOWN :: 3 seconds >>> 1 second
    • COOLDOWN BUGFIX :: Fixed a bug where Rell's E - Attract and Repelcooldown was scaling non-linearly
    • CAST (FAR)AWAY :: When cast from very long ranges, Rell should now properly path towards the target until in range to cast her E

    R - Magnet Storm

    • DAMAGE RATIO :: 70% AP >>> 110% AP

    riven.jpg

    Riven

    E cooldown decreased.

    The new season put Riven in a weak spot, and with high cooldowns on her E, she's lost her mojo. Since both of her hardbound items (Goredrinker/Ravenous Hydra) are getting substantial nerfs this patch, we're looking to reforge her spirit.

    E - Valor

    • COOLDOWN :: 12/11/10/9/8 seconds >>> 10/9/8/7/6 seconds

    seraphine.png

    Seraphine

    Passive base note damage decreased. W shield decreased.

    Seraphine is often front and center, and with her strong stage presence in mid lane (and other roles), she’s in need of some tuning down.

    Passive - Stage Presence

    • BASE NOTE DAMAGE :: 5-20 (levels 1-18) >>> 4-16 (levels 1-18)

    W - Surround Sound

    • SHIELD :: 60-120 (levels 1-18) >>> 50-100 (levels 1-18)

    shyvana.jpg

    Shyvana

    Q empowered basic attack damage and second strike bonus damage increased. W bonus movement speed increased.

    While AD Shyvana has been tearing up the Rift with both fighter and tank builds, AP Shyv has been dragging (dragon?) behind in the new season. We want to buff AP Shyvana in ways that aren't centered around her just spamming fireballs. These changes should help her clear speed, which is weaker with the new items.

    Q - Twin Bite

    • EMPOWERED BASIC ATTACK (FIRST STRIKE) DAMAGE :: 100% AD >>> 100% AD + 25% AP
    • SECOND STRIKE BONUS DAMAGE :: 20/35/50/65/80% AD >>> 20/35/50/65/80% AD + 15% AP

    W - Burnout

    • BONUS MOVEMENT SPEED :: 30/35/40/45/50% >>> 30/35/40/45/50% + <strong>(8%/100 AP)</strong> (still decays linearly)

    singed.jpg

    Singed

    Q damage ratio increased.

    Singed has been struggling since preseason, and even more so after the recent Imperial Mandate changes. We’re adding some power back to his signature spell. Remember, always chase Singed.

    Q - Poison Trail

    • DAMAGE RATIO :: 80% AP >>> 90% AP

    sylas.jpg

    Sylas

    Q cost flattened. W damage increased.

    We’re unshackling Sylas while also evening out his skill ranks.

    Q - Chain Lash

    • COST :: 50/55/60/65/70 mana >>> 55 mana

    W - Kingslayer

    • DAMAGE :: 65/100/135/170/205 (+85% AP) >>> 70/105/140/175/210 (+90% AP)

    taliyah.jpg

    Taliyah

    Passive bonus movement speed increased. Q subsequent stone damage against monsters decreased.

    Taliyah’s jungle surfing in Elite levels of play has been seismic. We're reverting some previous changes (11.1 and partially 10.25), while narrowing in on some specific jungle clear nerfs.

    Passive - Rock Surfing

    • BONUS MOVEMENT SPEED :: 12-40% (levels 1-18) >>> 20-45% (levels 1-18)

    Q - Threaded Volley

    • SUBSEQUENT STONE DAMAGE AGAINST MONSTERS :: 100% >>> 80%

    udyr.jpg

    Udyr

    R total base active aura damage decreased later.

    Udyr is another dominant jungler at the moment, especially with a Phoenix max. His items are already getting hit, so this nerf is aimed to be lighter than what he would normally merit.

    R - Phoenix Stance

    • TOTAL BASE ACTIVE AURA DAMAGE :: 50/100/150/200/250/300 >>> 50/95/140/185/230/275

    vlad.jpg

    Vladimir

    R cooldown now flat.

    Now that we’ve taken a couple stabs at balancing out preseason item changes, Vladimir has been left a little worse for wear. Instead of focusing buffs on his damage or healing, we’re taking a different route and opening up access to his ult.

    R - Hemoplague

    • COOLDOWN :: 150/135/120 seconds >>> 120 seconds

    Items

    Mage Items

    We’re doing a pass on mage items to create more balance amongst their purchase rates and to stop any one item from overshadowing the others (Lich Bane, Zhonya's Hourglass, Seeker's Armguard). We're also broadening Horizon Focus by lowering its activation range so that more mages can take advantage of its specialty. Lastly, we're unifying the stacking passives between Verdant Barrier and Seeker's Armguard for consistency.

    Lich Bane

    • ABILITY POWER :: 80 >>> 70

    Horizon Focus

    • ABILITY POWER :: 100 >>> 115
    • HYPERSHOT RANGE :: 750 >>> 700

    Verdant Barrier

    • [UPD] ADAPTIVE PASSIVE :: Every 60 seconds gain 3 bonus magic resistance, stacking up to 5 times. Taking magic damage reduces the time it takes to gain magic resistance >>> Grants 0.5 magic resistance per each unit killed (maximum 15)
    • COMBINE COST :: 315 gold >>> 115 gold

    Banshee's Veil

    • ABILITY POWER :: 65 >>> 80
    • COMBINE COST :: 400 gold >>> 700 gold

    Seeker’s Armguard

    • COMBINE COST :: 165 gold >>> 265 gold
    • TOTAL COST :: 900 gold >>> 1000 gold

    Zhonya’s Hourglass

    • TOTAL COST :: 2500 gold >>> 2600 gold

    Enchanter Items

    Zooming in on enchanter items, it’s clear that Flowing Water is largely overperforming compared to other second item choices. On the other hand, Chemtech Putrifier is fulfilling its niche role quite well (healing reduction), but it's not purchased as often or as powerful as the other Grievous Wounds items. We’re making some changes to ensure that enchanters feel they have access to a viable Grievous Wounds option as well as the other classes.

    Staff of Flowing Water

    • ABILITY POWER :: 60 >>> 50

    Chemtech Putrifier

    • ABILITY HASTE :: 15 >>> 20
    • [UPD] PUFFCAP TOXIN PASSIVE :: Inflicts immobilized enemy champions with 60% Grievous Wounds for 3 seconds >>> Healing or shielding an allied champion now empowers the ally’s next damage to an enemy champion with 60% Grievous Wounds for 3 seconds

    Fighter Items

    Silvermere Dawn isn't as efficient for an item we think is an important piece in the fighter ecosystem, so we’re upping its power. Additionally, Ironspike Whip has been helping certain champions invalidate minion waves, so we're removing the empowered damage to minions to better highlight those champions' strengths and weaknesses.

    Silvermere Dawn

    • ATTACK DAMAGE :: 35 >>> 40
    • HEALTH :: 200 >>> 300

    Ironspike Whip

    • [REM] CRESCENT EMPOWERED DAMAGE :: Ironspike no longer deals more damage to low health minions and monsters

    Marksman Items

    We're noticing that Phantom Dancer is rarely built as a second item, and almost never as a third. Not many champions need that much attack speed, so we're reshaping what the items give to marksman champions. We're also adding more oomph to Immortal Shieldbow since it's only purchased by hard-bound short ranged users that benefit from lifesteal, and even then, it loses out often to Galeforce which does the same in most situations.

    Phantom Dancer

    • BUILD PATH :: Dagger + Dagger + Zeal + 950 gold >>> Zeal + Long Sword + Long Sword + 850 gold
    • ATTACK DAMAGE :: 0 >>> 20
    • ATTACK SPEED :: 45% >>> 25%
    • STACKS FOR BONUS ATTACK SPEED :: 5 >>> 4
    • BONUS ATTACK SPEED :: 40% >>> 30%

    Immortal Shieldbow

    • ATTACK DAMAGE :: 50 >>> 55
    • ATTACK SPEED :: 15% >>> 20%

    Lord Dominik’s Regards

    • ARMOR PENETRATION :: 25% >>> 35%

    Sustain Items

    When building sustain, players should be feeling the effects of a real trade-off, usually in the form of damage. However, certain items with omnivamp (particularly Goredrinker and Ravenous Hydra) are feeling particularly overpowered due to less of a trade-off in damage. We're going through and making adjustments to those items, hitting their early game power specifically.

    Goredrinker

    • THIRSTING SLASH HEAL :: 25% AD + 12% missing health >>> 25% AD + 8% missing Health

    Leeching Leer

    • OMNIVAMP :: 10% >>> 5%
    • HEALTH :: 150 >>> 250

    Riftmaker

    • OMNIVAMP :: 15% >>> 8%
    • HEALTH :: 150 >>> 300
    • MYTHIC PASSIVE :: 5% magic penetration >>> 8 AP + 2% omnivamp

    Eclipse

    • EVER RISING MOON SHIELD :: 150/75 >>> 180/90
    • OMNIVAMP :: 10% >>> 8%

    Ravenous Hydra

    • OMNIVAMP :: 15% >>> 10%

    Sterak’s Gage

    • LIFELINE SHIELD :: 200 >>> 100
    • LIFELINE SHIELD DURATION :: 5 seconds >>> 4 seconds

    Tank Items

    We’re addressing some tank item outliers and opening Frozen Heart as a cheaper mana and ability haste item for tank supports, top laners, and junglers alike.

    Force of Nature

    • ABSORB BONUS MOVEMENT SPEED :: 6 (maximum 30) >>> 8 (maximum 40)

    Dead Man’s Plate

    • HEALTH :: 475 >>> 400
    Frozen Heart
    • TOTAL COST :: 2700 gold >>> 2500 gold
    • COMBINE COST :: 800 gold >>> 600 gold
    • ARMOR :: 80 >>> 70

    Zaun Clash

    Sign-ups and team formation for the first Clash of Season 2021 will begin during 11.3 on Monday, February 15th! The tournament will officially start in patch 11.4. Check out the Clash tab in the client for specific tournament start times and details.

    ARURF Balance Changes

    ARURF is back in time for the Lunar festivities. Since this is the first URF since the item changes, we're changing a few things to better fit with the new system. The intent is to allow players to build the items they want to without worrying about missing out on any value. Now, even though your starting cooldowns will be ever so slightly higher than last time URF was on, you can now build ability haste and mana items without the worry of missing out on stats… and can potentially get your cooldowns even <em>lower</em> than you ever could before.

    • ARURF (and URF) now grants 300 ability haste instead of 80% CDR. Ability haste you gain from other sources will stack with the URF bonus unlike in previous runs.
    • The URF bonus ability haste also applies to Summoner Spells and item actives, similar to how the special CDR did before
    • Bonus mana will now be converted to health at a 40% ratio. Bonus mana regen is converted to health regen at a 100% ratio.
    • Spellthief's Edge, Steel Shoulderguards, Relic Shield, and Spectral Sickle will be disabled. The gold penalty for killing minions given by these items far exceeds any value you would normally get for building these items, especially when considering that a portion of gold is already shared with minion kills on URF.
    • The runes Lethal Tempo and Ultimate Hunter will no longer be disabled

    Bugfixes/QoL Changes

    • LEAGUE CLIENT: Receiving a game invite will now play a sound if you have another invite pending
    • When a player is flagged as AFK/Leaver at the end of any Ranked game, they will be notified that their LP will be reduced; this applies to both wins and losses. The other players in the lobby will be notified that the flagged AFK/Leaver player will receive less LP over their next several games. If a player would exceed 100 LP, but would fall back below 100 LP after the penalty is applied, they do not promote.
    • Fixed a bug where Shyvana's W - Burnout would not apply the AP ratio for additional movement speed when in her dragon form
    • Fixed a bug where Goredrinker and Ceaseless Hunger's Mythic Passive would not grant additional 5 ability haste for each Legendary item in the player's inventory
    • Fixed a bug where an attack empowered by both Sheen and Essence Reaver would not grant mana back from Essence Reaver
    • Items that do damage to enemies can now properly trigger the execute from The Collector
    • The Collector's execute will now properly trigger on targets with Death's Dance
    • Eclipse and Syzygy's omnivamp will now properly work even after being upgraded by Ornn's Passive - Living Forge
    • The SFX that plays when a player acquires a Dragon Soul will no longer replay if that player kills a Red Brambleback or Blue Sentinel
    • The Dragon Soul VFX no longer disappears on death and reappears after the player kills a Red Brambleback or Blue Sentinel
    • Imperial Mandate's Coordinate Fire passive now properly goes on cooldown for 6 seconds after on-champion slows and immobilizations
    • Fixed a bug where if Smite was used before jungle monsters spawned, the cooldown would be longer than intended
    • Gangplank has a new interface to upgrade his ultimate with Silver Serpents! Check it out while you're in base, since no one ever forgets to buy their upgrades.

    Lunar Beast Alistar

    1350 RP

    "The leader of Ox Clan, Alistar keeps his stubborn squad in line with his reliability and gruff approval. A bit quick to anger with some squad members' bull-headedness, he's determined that nothing and no one will derail this Lunar New Year festival, or Ox Clan's plan to make it a flawless celebration."

    12029.jpg

    alistarturn.png

    Lunar Beast Annie

    1350 RP

    annieturn.png

    Lunar Beast Aphelios

    1350 RP

    "Aphelios stays quiet, preferring to worship the Bull God according to obscure "old ways" that are unfamiliar to the rest of his squad. His teammates are welcoming, if curious, but have yet to realize that Aphelios and his sister Alune are actually the Bull God's progeny, placed among the squad to face this year's Lunar Beast."

    523009.jpg

    aphturn.png

    Lunar Beast Darius

    1350 RP

    "Darius' imposing presence and determination to lead by example cause occasional tension between him and Alistar, the actual leader of the squad. Despite how overbearing he can be, Darius is a strong and steadfast friend to his teammates and a rock for the whole Clan."

    122024.jpg

    dariusturn.png

    Lunar Beast Jarvan IV

    1350 RP

    "Jarvan IV's stubborn refusal to join Ox Clan only relented to his father's stubborn insistence. Though he tries his best to shirk the celebrity status that comes with the role, Jarvan comes from a long line of philanthropists, and has found himself caught up in the thrill of bringing businesslike efficiency to the biggest community event of the year."

    59021.jpg

    jarvanturn.png

    Lunar Beast Fiora

    1350 RP

    "Fiora keeps mostly to herself, determined to reclaim her family's honor from her father's failure as a member of the last Ox Squad. She thinks the rest of the squad doesn't take their duties seriously enough, and her determination to avoid another disastrous New Year makes her seem standoffish and cold to her teammates."

    114050.jpg

    fioraturn.png

    Lunar Beast Fiora Prestige Edition

    "Long days of community service and long nights of tactical planning have left Fiora not drained but energized. Her steely determination has hardened into foresight and loyalty. Whatever the Lunar Beast throws at them, Ox Squad knows Fiora has their back."

    fiora1turn.png

    Crystal Rose Swain

    1350 RP

    "Swain knows how important the alliances formed at the Festival of the Crystal Rose are... and how fragile. His determination to see the event go perfectly has gained him a connection with Zyra, the Rose's protector. With her help, he intends this to be the most successful festival ever-- and that he will be celebrated as its architect."

    50012.jpg

    swainturn.jpg

    Crystal Rose Zyra

    1350 RP

    "Born from a cutting of the Crystal Rose, Zyra wields her piercing thorns against any who seek to harm it. For this year's festival, she has agreed to attend in a social capacity, accompanying Swain as the Crystal Rose Festival's dual hosts. But her respect for his vision will not distract her from springing into action at the slightest hint of danger."

    143007.jpg

    zyraturn.jpg

    Withered Rose Syndra

    1350 RP

    "Syndra has been shunned from the festival for years over her support of the disgraced Zed. Unable to bear this slight any longer, she is determined to infiltrate the event and poison the very heart of the Crystal Rose itself with her sweetly dripping ichor."

    91029.jpg

    syndraturn.jpg

    Withered Rose Talon

    1350 RP

    "After the alliance his adopted sister Katarina formed at the last festival was broken, Talon swore revenge. He intends to restore their family's honor by exposing and shattering the entire concept of this celebration of glittering finery and sacred vows. Nothing and no one at this year's festival will escape his wrath."

    Teamfight Tactics Patch 11.3 Notes

    TFT_Patch_11_3_Notes_Banner_v2.jpgCheck out the TFT Patch 11.3 notes:

    "Welcome festival-goers,
    We're one and a half patches into the festival, but the party's just begun. A big congrats to those who reached Challenger first in their respective regions! The VIP room is now spilling out to the balcony with party-goers battling for Rank 1. This patch brings a mini-rework to Divine, some updates to 1-costs, and a few other changes. We are a bit light on updates here, as the B-patch last week had quite a few. As always, we'll be keeping up with the conversations you're all having throughout the festival and implementing changes as needed.

    PATCH HIGHLIGHTS

    TFT_Patch_11_3_Highlights.jpg

    TRAITS
    Dragonsoul is getting a vengeful quality of life, or should I say death, improvement, Spirit 4 is losing some of its spirit, and Slayer 6 is embracing its heavy metal late game identity. But the real topic here is Divine. With only its duration scaling in the past, Divine has struggled to find its foothold as a trait worth investing deeply into. We want to make Divine worth devoting your comp to by giving Divine units a powerful moment of ascension that escalates in potency with each level.
    • Dragonsoul: Upon passing the blessing after death, the ally's next basic attack will immediately trigger the Dragon Breath
    • Divine Buff Duration: 3/6/9/15 ⇒ 6 seconds across all
    • Divine Buff Damage Reduction: 45% ⇒ 35/45/55/65%
    • Divine Buff Bonus True Damage: 45% ⇒ 35/45/55/65%
    • Spirit Attack Speed: 20/40% ⇒ 20/35%
    • Slayer Lifesteal: 15-30 / 25-50% ⇒ 15-30 / 30-60%
    • Slayer Damage: 20-45 / 30-75% ⇒ 20-45 / 35-80%
    CHAMPIONS

    Tier 1
    The changes here are meant to empower some of the underperforming units, so here are some underperforming Brand-dead jokes to accompany them:
    What do you call an angry fire on a shooting range?
    A Ranging Fire.
    • Brand Attack Range: 660 ⇒ 890
    Did you hear about the spider changes?
    It's the Elisest we could do.
    • Elise's attacks in Spider Form now increase the cost of her target's next spell by 35/35/50%
    • Elise Health on Spider Form Transformation: 35/40/45% ⇒ 25/30/45%
    What did Tristana call Brand at the relay race?
    Rapid Fire.
    • Tristana Rapid Fire Attack Speed: 50/60/80% ⇒ 60/70/90%
    What do you call a mad Diana?
    A lunartic.
    • Diana Pale Cascade Orbs now spawn further away from her body when her size increases (ie: Titan's Resolve)
    Tier 3
    Okay, one more… What's Darius' favorite beverage?
    A Guillotini with extra damage.
    • Darius Fortune's Guillotine Damage: 550/800/1300 ⇒ 550/850/1400
    ITEMS
    This is part of making our Mana Reave system consistent.
    • Shroud of Stillness Mana Cost Increase: 33% ⇒ 35%
    BUGS
    • I was not the first to reach Challenger. I know, I know, we're all disappointed. But let's still give it up for Coralie..."

    1/25 TFT Mid-Patch Update

    rakan.png

    Here's a look at a TFT mid-patch update that went out on January 15th:

    "1/25/2021 Balance Changes
    Thanks for joining in on the party and providing ample feedback along the way. Most of these mid-patch balance changes should come as no surprise, cause y’all are the ones rooting for them. We’ll check in again soon, but for now let’s pull the feathers out of our clothes and get back to the party!
    Champions
    • Diana Pale Cascade Orbs: 4/5/7 ⇒ 4/5/6
    • Rakan: fixed a bug where Rakan could start to gain Mana while his shield was still active near the end of its duration.
    • Rakan Mana: 40/80 ⇒ 60/120
    • Rakan Disarming Diversion Shield: 300/550/950 ⇒ 200/400/800
    • Zed Contempt for the Weak Attack Damage Steal: 20/30/40% ⇒ 20/25/30%
    • Aurelion Sol Voice of Lightning Damage: 350/550/1750 ⇒ 325/500/1750
    • Xayah Mana Lock after spell cast duration: 1 second ⇒ 1.5 seconds
    • Yone Seal Fate Armor/Magic Resist Shred: 40/40/40% ⇒ 60/60/80%
    Tooltip Fix
    • Katarina’s Tooltip has been bugged for a few patches, oops. The correct damage numbers for her spell, Death Lotus will now be accurate on the tooltip: 600/900/1650"

    Ask Riot: Lessons from Dev

    AskRiot_Aatrox_Banner.jpg Here's the first Ask Riot of the year - "The Aatrox VGU, why most skins are part of thematics, and an update on the votes.":

    "Welcome to Ask Riot
    After a brief hiatus, we’re happy to say Ask Riot is back in session. So… let’s kick off the year with some questions about champions, VGUs, and skin thematics.
    Also, please send us all your questions! It’s how we know what you care about. And it makes us happy.
    Why are all of the skins you make now in a line (like Battle Queens) instead of unique ones for each champ?
    There are a number of reasons why we've had more releases that are a collection of skins within a single thematic. One is that we're investing more into the world building and visual development of our thematics. Spirit Blossom is a great example of this, where we develop the thematic for some time, invest a lot of effort to build a creative foundation, then want to build more than just a couple skins in order to make sure we explore the thematic sufficiently for its initial release. Doing bigger "drops," or more skins per thematic release, also gives us more opportunities to bring lower playrate champions into major or new thematics—Spirit Blossom Kindred is a great example here.
    This doesn't preclude us from making one-off skins. Sometimes there will be champs that just don't cleanly fit in the thematics we're developing, and we'll be keeping an eye out for single skin opportunities that we think players will really dig.
    Riot Eggo McLego, Product Lead, Skins and Personalization Content
    What happened to the VGU you announced that was going to come after Mundo?
    We ran into some unexpected delays and never really got started on the VGU we announced in September’s Champion Roadmap. As such, we decided to make good on our original promise, which was to let you all decide which champion we should update next.
    The poll results are nearly in, and we’re excited to announce the winning champion—who’ll receive the next VGU after Dr. Mundo—next week. The winner of the thematic vote will also be revealed then.
    Reav3, Lead Producer of Champions Team
    What is one experience with creating or reworking a champion that led to a drastic change in how all champions were handled?
    I don't know about a specific champion that led to a drastic change in how we handle ALL champs, but there was a VGU that changed how we handled all VGUs, and that was Aatrox.
    Prior to Aatrox, new champions and VGUs had the same primary goal, which was to drive engagement. In other words, both VGUs and new champions were designed to get lots of players to play them, that way League consistently has fresh new gameplay, whether you're playing with, as, or against the champion. This doesn’t mean every champion has to be super popular—we sometimes create champs who we know will be niche but who we hope will have a dedicated player base.
    New champions and VGUs had very different secondary goals though. For new champions, our secondary goal was (and still is) to expand League’s IP. For VGUs, our secondary goal was to build player trust in our dev team and keep League feeling up to date and modern.
    Because our primary goal for VGUs was getting people to play the champions, we’d sometimes make choices that we felt would make the champs more engaging and exciting to the broader playerbase, even if it sometimes meant we had to make drastic changes to the champion’s play pattern or style. It’s easy to see fault in this approach now, but those were the goals that we thought made sense at the time. In any case, this is how we approached Aatrox’s update.
    As such, we ended up with a champion with a much higher playrate amongst a dedicated playerbase, and if we were judging success solely based on our primary goal, then Aatrox was a success. However, the new engagement came at the cost of alienating a lot of old Aatrox players. It also made many players afraid for their favorite champions to get a VGU, in fear that we’d change them so far from what they love, they wouldn’t love them anymore.
    After Aatrox’s update, we swapped the primary and secondary goals for VGUs. Player trust became (and remains) our primary goal—even if that means the champ ends up being a little less engaging or exciting for the broader playerbase.
    In some ways, when we update a champion, we’re really updating something that’s no longer ours. It’s a character that sometimes millions of players have grown to love globally, and we want to make sure we do good by you all first and foremost.
    This is part of the reason we’ve begun doing VGU polls. It’s also why we release multiple dev blogs throughout development so we can get earlier feedback from more players on the direction we’re headed, and make adjustments based on that feedback. We hope this new approach is something that can be felt in our most recent updates, and we hope that we can continue building trust between you all and the Champions Team.
    Reav3, Lead Producer of Champions Team

    "UPDATE
    Thanks everyone for the feedback! Team had a look and we were able to make the following adjustments:
    • Crystal Rose Zyra's Garden of Thorns (P) seed VFX and Rampant Growth (W) seed VFX has been pushed to further differentiate between the (P) and (W) from both the Ally and Enemy POV.
    • The issue that attached Crystal Rose Zyra's brow to her hair fringe, noticeable during Taunt (Ctrl+2), has been fixed.
    • Crystal Rose Zyra's Deadly Spines (Q) plant model, coloring, and animation has been adjusted to address the "phallic" association."
    Lunar Beast Aphelios
    "EDITED TO ADD POST PBE NOTES
    Aphelios Post-PBE Notes
    Bugs & Bugfixes:
    • Alune's portrait will be present on the HUD!
    • Aphelios tooltips are crazy. There are some grammatical issues. They wont be fixed in time for his release.
    Feedback:
    • SFX on the Q & Auto-attack have been softened.
    • Severum auto attack 'squeaking' fixed.
    • We hear that you would like to hear a more satisfying sound on the Chakrams on Crescendum, however our audio peeps don't have the capacity to redesign this.
    • We agree with you that the crit strike lacks some "oompfh", however this isn't a simple asset tweak for our audio team as the crit sound is shared across all of the guns. Due to this our audio folks don't have the bandwidth to experiment with the implications of changing this.
    • After checking Alune's face on her ult we can confirm it is in the same position as on her default. So we wont be making any changes here.
    • Also the horns, we are so sorry but we cant make them glow even though we know they would look super awesome. We really don't want to take away from the visual read of the guns. They are the most important read for Aphelios.
    • We would like to maintain consistency across the Lunar Beast skinline with the scanline effect in his VFX. Due to the lower number of players that would actually see the distortion effect too, we would prefer to keep this as is.
    • I'm still awaiting a final answer on the whether we can move Alune inside the portrait more in the loading screen. I wanted to give you a more definitive answer on this today, but I also didn't want to keep you waiting. The folks are busy working away on other splashes right now, but as soon as I can get an answer on this ill update this thread.
    • I admire your post about adding more color to the Calibrum. The dedication to adding more color's to his kit made me chuckle (and almost cry)! The team agreed this would be information overload, but we commend you for trying!
    I hope that we were able to offer a bit more clarity around our thought process and goals for our skins in our response to your feedback. We aim to do this with all of our PBE feedback going forward.
    Thanks, GL and HF!

Over the millenia, Jhin has whispered of power, freedom, and true godhood to Nautilus, until he finally released him. Now twisted with anger, Nautilus's rivers run not with water, but molten magma."

    1) Riot Scruffy tweeted a patch preview for 11.3:

    "11.3 Patch Preview is here. This is definitely a meaty patch.

    -Took a big sweep across items to find over and underperformers

    -More reductions on systemic healing (but not all nerfs just shifting)

    -Lots of OP and sad champions to adjust

    More tomorrow when we have full changes"
