    Patch_11_6_Notes_Banner.jpg Check out the Patch 11.6 Notes:

    "11.6 and school’s in session!

    But have no fear, your handy dandy cheat sheet here: the big snapshots of this patch include adjustments to outliers in Pro play, a refresh button for Xin Zhao, and an overall reduction targeting systemic healing (i.e. from runes and items). Staying alive is one thing, but it’s a problem when certain champs start feeling invincible. We’re hoping this pass will help cement healing as more of a choice rather than a crutch.

    But once you’re done hitting the books, hit the rift, ace the enemy team, and school your opponents. We’ll see ya next period patch.

    And for those of you who hate studying, take this portal to TFT patch notes to check in on a universe where school’s out forever.

    akali.jpg

    Akali

    Base health decreased and health growth increased. Passive energy restore removed. Q cost increased early and decreased later; bonus damage removed. W now increases Akali’s maximum energy. E total damage increased; first hit damage ratio decreased; second hit damage ratio increased. R first dash now deals magic damage and has increased later scaling with AP.

    From the start of most games, Akali is able to wield her durability to help her coast through even the most difficult early lane phases. We’re reducing her early game tankiness so that her laning success isn't always guaranteed, but in return, we’re giving her an overall net buff with later dueling payoff, so that when she strikes, it’s deadly. In addition, we're also making her energy management more intuitive so that if you’re just now picking her up, it doesn’t take so much… energy?

    Base Stats

    • HEALTH :: 575 >>> 500
    • HEALTH GROWTH :: 95 >>> 105

    Passive - Assassin's Mark

    • [REM] SWINGING KAMA ENERGY RESTORE :: Assassin's Mark no longer restores 10/15/20 energy

    Q - Five Point Strike

    • COST :: 120/115/110/105/100 energy >>> 130/115/100/85/70 energy
    • [REM] RANK 5 BONUS DAMAGE :: Five Point Strike no longer deals 25% bonus magic damage to minions and monsters.

    W - Twilight Shroud

    • [NEW] ENERGIZER SHROUD :: Twilight Shroud now increases Akali’s maximum energy by 80 (and still restores 80 energy)

    E - Shuriken Flip

    • TOTAL DAMAGE :: 100/170/240/310/380 (+70% AD) (+100% AP) >>> 100/170/240/310/380/450 (+85% AD) (+120% AP)
    • DAMAGE SPLIT BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND HIT :: 50% of the total damage, 50% of the total damage >>> 30% of the total damage, 70% of the total damage

    R - Perfect Execution

    • FIRST DASH DAMAGE TYPE :: Physical >>> Magic
    • FIRST DASH DAMAGE :: 125/225/325 (+50% bonus AD) >>> 80/220/360 (+50% bonus AD) (+30% AP)

    gnar.jpg

    Gnar

    W bonus base damage decreased.

    Despite being mini, Gnar has been mega in Pro play, so we’re pulling back on his in-lane harass.

    W - Hyper

    • BONUS BASE DAMAGE :: 10/20/30/40/50 >>> 0/10/20/30/40

    hecarim.jpg

    Hecarim

    Q base damage decreased later.

    Hecarim has been at peak pony in the jungle for a while, especially with tankier builds. By lowering his base damage, he’ll have to sacrifice some heft to deal more harm.

    Q - Rampage

    • BASE DAMAGE :: 60/102/144/186/228 >>> 60/97/134/171/208

    karthus.jpg

    Karthus

    Q base damage decreased later.

    Karthus is particularly temperamental to changes in the meta, so he’s become a familiar face in the patch notes. This time around, with players refining his optimal builds, he’s crept back into the spotlight in Elite play, so we’re bringing down his damage.

    Q - Lay Waste

    • BASE DAMAGE :: 45/65/85/105/125 (90/130/170/210/250) >>> 45/62.5/80/97.5/115 (90/125/160/195/230)

    leblanc.jpg

    LeBlanc

    W cost decreased later.

    LeBlanc has been feeling chained down and could use some help finding success. We’re opening up more opportunities for her to dash in and out of a kerfuffle.

    W - Distortion

    • COST :: 60/75/90/105/120 mana >>> 60/70/80/90/100 mana

    lillia.png

    Lillia

    R cooldown increased.

    Since she entered the ring, Lillia has managed to prance her way out of any nerfs while still remaining a staple in professional play. With many of her competitors falling out of favor, it's time for her to get Eep!ed. Her ultimate has AoE fight-changing capabilities, so we're bumping up its cooldown to reflect its potency.

    R - Lilting Lullaby

    • COOLDOWN :: 130/110/90 seconds >>> 150/130/110 seconds

    pyke.jpg

    Pyke

    E cooldown now decreases.

    Pyke has been in the deep end ever since we submerged mid Pyke in 11.5. Now that there isn’t a huge skew towards mid over support, it’s finally time to help him resurface by giving him a rankup that has some oomph.

    E - Phantom Undertow

    • COOLDOWN :: 15 seconds >>> 15/14/13/12/11 seconds

    renekton.jpg

    Renekton

    R bonus health decreased later.

    As a strong pick for late-game survivability in skirmishes and teamfights, this croc has been up and down the block in Pro play. We’re cutting down his late-game tankiness so that his enemies have a fighting chance to find his Achilles’ scale.

    R - Dominus

    • BONUS HEALTH :: 250/500/750 >>> 250/400/550

    sylas.jpg

    Sylas

    Passive Unshackled bonus attack speed increased. W cooldown, cost, and heal ratio decreased.

    Sylas has been feeling underwhelming and boxed in, and he’s at a point where we feel comfortable breaking him out. Giving him more opportunities to slip, slap, and slash, without breaking the (healing) bank.

    Passive - Petricite Burst

    • UNSHACKLED BONUS ATTACK SPEED :: 80% >>> 125%

    W - Kingslayer

    • COOLDOWN :: 13/11.5/10/8.5/7 seconds >>> 13/11.25/9.5/7.75/6 seconds
    • COST :: 70/80/90/100/110 mana >>> 60/70/80/90/100 mana
    • HEAL RATIO :: 50% AP >>> 45% AP

    URGOT.jpg

    Urgot

    W on-hit damage effectiveness decreased.

    The change to Urgot in patch 11.4 was meant to make squishier Kraken Slayer off-builds more viable, but he’s veered off course, scuttling over to rush Titanic Hydra instead. We’re reverting his on-hit modification to steer him away from the off-build altogether and help him hone back in to his primary build.

    W - Purge

    • ON-HIT DAMAGE EFFECTIVENESS :: 75% >>> 50%

    volibear.jpg

    Volibear

    W healing from monsters is no longer halved. E capped damage now flat.

    There have been reports of bears, horses, and deer running amok in the jungle, but after thorough investigation, Volibear has been deemed innocent of all jungle gap wrongdoing. If anything, he's been the victim. We're waking him out of his jungle hibernation to enjoy the new season.

    W - Frenzied Maul

    • [REM] WOUNDED HEALING :: Healing from Wounded monsters is no longer halved (still reduced against minions)

    E - Sky Splitter

    • CAPPED DAMAGE :: 150/300/450/600/750 >>> 750 at all ranks

    xin.jpg

    Xin Zhao

    Passive heal decreased; stack consumption bugfix. Q bonus base damage decreased early. W cooldown reduced; cost increased; reduced damage against minions now scales down, hitbox adjusted. W1 cast time now flat. W2 damage now scales with crit strike chance; W2 range and missile speed increased; W2 now Challenges enemies.

    We're shipping two sets of changes to Xin at once: One focused on his core AD fighter build and one to open up an AP off-build. This is a long one, so to make it less of a Xin ow, we’ve broken his patch notes up accordingly.

    First, the AD Xin we all know and love: a Demacian warrior with a strong spirit and an even stronger spear. As a brawler who uniquely excels at skirmishes, we’re sharpening his distinctive strengths by giving him tools to extend combos and initiate duels. With new, creative ways to get to his enemies, he’ll feel more empowered or, dare we say, audacious, to dive into teamfights and skirmishes.

    AD Fighter Adjustments

    Passive - Determination

    • HEAL :: 10-112 (levels 1-18) >>> 7-92 (levels 1-18)
    • BUGFIX :: Xin Zhao now correctly consumes his <strong>Passive - Determination</strong> stacks after basic attacking an enemy shortly after casting <strong>W - Wind Becomes Lightning</strong>

    Q - Three Talon Strike

    • BONUS BASE DAMAGE :: 20/28/36/44/52 >>> 16/25/34/43/52

    W - Wind Becomes Lightning

    • COOLDOWN :: 12/11/10/9/8 seconds >>> 12/10.5/9/7.5/6 seconds
    • COST :: 45 mana >>> 60 mana
    • REDUCED DAMAGE AGAINST MINIONS :: 50% >>> 50%-0% (levels 1-16)
    • SLASH CAST TIME :: 0.5-0.4 seconds (based on attack speed) >>> 0.5 seconds
    • [NEW] THRUST DAMAGE MODIFIER :: Thrust's damage now increases by up to 33% based on critical strike chance
    • THRUST RANGE :: 900 >>> 1000
    • THRUST MISSILE SPEED :: 5000 >>> 6250
    • [NEW] A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES :: Thrust now Challenges enemy champions and monsters and reveals them for 3 seconds
    • [UPD] VFX :: Hitbox now extends slightly behind Xin Zhao for visual clarity
    E - Audacious Charge
    • [NEW] NOT MUCH OF A CHALLENGE :: Audacious Charge’s cast range increases to 1100 on Challenged enemies
    Passive heal AP ratio increased. W2 damage ratio now scales with AP. R now scales with AP.

    But wait, what if Xin wants to change things up a bit? Put down the spear and don a wizard hat instead? Before his rework, AP Xin Zhao occasionally made the rounds as a fun off-build with a distinctly different playstyle from his AD counterpart. These changes are geared towards bringing AP Xin back into play, but we still expect his AD-focused builds to come out on top.

    AP Adjustments

    Passive - Determination

    • HEAL AP RATIO :: 40% >>> 55% AP

    W - Wind Becomes Lightning

    • [NEW] THRUST DAMAGE RATIO :: 50% AP

    R - Crescent Guard

    • [NEW] DAMAGE RATIO :: 100% AD >>> 100% AD, 110% AP

    Items

    Healing Items

    The amount of systemic healing—or healing from runes and items—is still trending high, so we’re shifting some of the power from burst healing into other areas.

    Immortal Shieldbow

    • LIFESTEAL :: 12% >>> 10%
    • [REM] LIFELINE LIFESTEAL :: Immortal Shieldbow no longer grants 15% lifesteal for 8 seconds
    • [NEW] LIFELINE :: Immortal Shieldbow now grants 13-35 AD when triggered
    • SHIELD :: 250-700 >>> 300-800

    Blade of the Ruined King

    • LIFESTEAL :: 12% >>> 10%
    • SIPHON DAMAGE :: 40-120 (levels 1-18) >>> 40-150 (levels 1-18)

    Sterak's Gage

    • [UPD] BLOODLUST :: After dealing damage to or taking damage from an enemy champion, the first stack heals you for [2% for melee | 1.2% for ranged] of maximum health, <strong>decreasing by 50% per stack afterwards</strong>, over 6 seconds.

    Liandry's Anguish

    We’re aiming to open up more potential AP Mythics by making Liandry and Luden’s more usable across mages. These changes should entice burst mages to pick it up when facing tanky team comps.

    • [REM] TORMENT MAGIC PENETRATION :: Liandry’s no longer grants 5% magic penetration per second against burning targets
    • [NEW] TORMENT BONUS DAMAGE :: Liandry’s now grants up to 12% bonus magic damage to champions based on their bonus health (maximum 1250 bonus health)

    Luden's Tempest

    Like Liandry’s above, we’re adding another AP Mythic to the mix. This should be a better option for mages who deal damage over time.

    • [NEW] ECHO COOLDOWN :: Dealing ability damage to an enemy champion now also reduces Echo’s cooldown by 0.5 seconds (up to 3 seconds per ability)

    Rabadon's Deathcap

    Looking to make Rabadon’s a more snug and budget-friendly fit as a third purchase.

    • TOTAL COST :: 3800 gold >>> 3600 gold

    Seeker's Armguard

    Seeker's Armguard and Verdant Barrier have been doing their job a bit <em>too</em> well, keeping AP scaling champs too safe as the laning phase progresses, which masks their intended weaknesses and contributes to a particularly dull meta. We’re adjusting the strength of these mid-tier items, while retaining the power level of the Legendary items they build into (Zhonya’s Hourglass and Banshee’s Veil).

    • BONUS ARMOR PER KILL :: 1 >>> 0.5
    • MAX ARMOR :: 30 >>> 15

    Verdant Barrier

    Seek up to Seeker’s! Like the above, we’re nudging down Verdant’s power while keeping its final item strength.

    • MAGIC RESIST PER KILL :: 0.5 >>> 0.3
    • MAX MAGIC RESIST :: 15 >>> 9
    • ABILITY POWER :: 25 >>> 20

    Shurelya's Battlesong

    By the numbers, Moonstone Renewer has been the dominating choice among enchanters, so we're buffing Battlesong to be an even catchier tune than it already is.

    • INSPIRE COOLDOWN :: 90 seconds >>> 75 seconds

    Stridebreaker

    It’s time for Stridebreaker to take a break.

    • HEALTH :: 300 >>> 200

    Ironspike Whip

    Strangely, Stridebreaker had a longer cooldown than Ironspike, so we’re rectifying that. We’re also bringing down its cost to account for its power loss.

    • TOTAL COST :: 1200 gold >>> 1100 gold
    • COOLDOWN :: 15 seconds >>> 20 seconds

    Sunfire Aegis

    Now that players are starting to realize other tank Mythics are reasonable options, we feel comfortable giving back some of Sunfire’s oomph, considering it has been the worst performing item among its peers for a while.

    • ABILITY HASTE :: 15 >>> 20
    • IMMOLATE SUBSEQUENT DAMAGE :: 10% per second, up to 60% >>> 12% per second, up to 72%

    Void Staff

    With a strong passive and low cost, we’re making it worse as an early rush item.

    • ABILITY POWER :: 65 >>> 70
    • COST :: 400 gold >>> 600 gold

    Jungle Camp Changes

    The last set of jungle changes took a sufficient amount of experience out of the jungle, so we're refunding some of it with a buff to Smite (below) and good ol’ Gromp. This should now fix a certain route to help junglers get to level 3 after 3 camps, and keep them alive.

    Gromp

    • HEAL :: 60-230 (levels 1-18) >>> 90-243 (levels 1-18)
    • XP :: 125/128.13/134.38/143.75/156.25/168.75 (levels 1/3/4/5/7/9) >>> 135/138.38/145.13/155.25/168.75/182.25 (levels 1/3/4/5/7/9)

    Summoner Spells

    Smite

    Alongside Gromp’s buff and the hit to Ravenous Hunter, we’re adding an extra healing bump by giving some base healing to make it less treacherous for the junglers who are less tanky and struggle to sustain themselves.

    • BASE HEAL :: 70 >>> 90

    Teleport

    Addressing unintuitive and frustrating scenarios around Teleport, such as Teleporting and zooming right back into lane after an early death. In compensation, we’re giving it a buff to maintain its power as a playmaking tool.

    • [UPD] HOME(START) ALONE :: Teleport now removes Homestart and respawn Homeguard
    • BONUS MOVEMENT SPEED :: 30/40/50% (levels 1/6/11) >>> 50%
    • COOLDOWN :: 420-240 seconds (levels 1-18) >>> 420-210 seconds (levels 1-18)

    Runes

    Fleet Footwork

    Although useful on a number of champions, this rune is a bit too generous with its sustain for AP champions, so we’re targeting that.

    • HEAL RATIO :: 30% AP >>> 20% AP

    Ravenous Hunter

    Another change under the umbrella of healing adjustments: Ravenous has been standing out as a strong rune of choice for secured sustain, so we’re giving it a tap down.

    • [REM] BASE OMNIVAMP :: Ravenous Hunter no longer has a base of 1% omnivamp
    • OMNIVAMP PER STACK :: 1.7% >>> 1.5%

    In-Game Shop Updates

    The shop is pretty certain it can hit Gold this year if it puts the hours in. In the meantime, here are some updates.

    • Item Briefs ("Anti-Tank") are now displayed in tooltips and shop descriptions. If you've ever wondered why people would build Serpent's Fang, now you know.
    • Components of items with deep build trees will no longer overlap. Noonquiver's children can now breathe easy.
    • Pinging the omnivamp stat will now show the correct values instead of the incorrect ones. That's probably how it should’ve started right?
    • [NEW] HOTKEY BLING :: When the shop is open, you can quickly select items in your inventory by pressing their number keys. Unleash your inner speed shopper!
    • More bug fixes and performance improvements.

    Noxus Clash

    After Zaun, the next Clash tournament will be... Noxus-themed! The first weekend will be March 20th and 21st, and the second weekend will be April 3rd and 4th. Team formation for the first weekend will be open starting on March 15th.

    DX11 Support

    Last year, we published an article that talked about the upcoming change and rollout for DX11, and it’s finally here! In case of issues during the rollout, we've given players the option to fallback to DX9, which can be found in the League Client settings > Game Options > Prefer DX9 Legacy Mode.

    ARAM Balance Changes

    11.6 Buffs:

    • Akali :: +15% damage dealt & -15% damage taken >>> +20% damage dealt & -20% damage taken
    • Camille :: +5% damage dealt & -5% damage taken >>> +10% damage dealt & -10% damage taken & +10% shielding
    • Katarina :: +5% damage dealt & -5% damage taken >>> +10% damage dealt & -10% damage taken
    • Kayn :: +5% damage dealt
    • Kha'Zix :: +8% damage dealt & -10% damage taken >>> +10% damage dealt & -15% damage taken
    • Kindred :: +5% damage dealt & -5% damage taken >>> +10% damage dealt & -10% damage taken
    • Kled :: -5% damage taken >>> +5% damage dealt & -10% damage taken
    • Syndra :: +5% damage dealt
    • Udyr :: +8% damage dealt & -8% damage taken >>> +10% damage dealt & -10% damage taken & +10% shielding
    • Viego :: +5% damage dealt & -5% damage taken
    • Zoe :: +5% damage dealt >>> +5% damage dealt & -5% damage taken

    11.6 Nerfs:

    • Caitlyn :: -5% damage dealt

    The following chromas will be released this patch:

    Champion Skins

    Six new skins will be available this patch!

    Battle Academia Caitlyn

    1820 RP (Legendary) "A feared and respected second year, head of the Luminary Club, and class president of Labrys God-Weapon Academy. Caitlyn enrolled herself in the famously troubled school specifically to whip the delinquents there into prime fighting shape, hoping to one day become the greatest battlefield general in history. With her perfect record, she's not too far off."

    51022.jpg

    caitlynturn.png

    [KateyKhaos on how to transform gun: "You acquire one item (boots don't count), and once you leave the fountain you will trigger the stage 2 transform. Upon acquiring your third item, when you leave the fountain, you will trigger the last stage."

    Battle Academia Garen

    1350 RP "'Brother' to Lux, Garen is the only biological child of his family, but was neglected from an early age as his parents spent all their time developing the god-weapon fragment that would one day become their daughter. As he vented his anger in increasingly delinquent ways, Labrys sought him out for enrollment, where he eventually joined the Battle Club."

    86024.jpg

    garenturn.png

    Battle Academia Leona

    1350 RP "An oddly cheery member of Labrys Academy's Battle Club, Leona's dark side comes out in combat, when her motherly, protective persona is utterly replaced by bloodlust. The change is so dramatic that even the most violent students tend to stay on her good side, hoping to avoid her wrath."

    89021.jpg

    leonaturn.png

    Battle Academia Leona Prestige Edition

    100 Prestige Points "After being selected for the yearly cross-academy tournament, Leona sharpened her combat prowess almost every free moment she had, knowing she had to beat out other top-ranking students from rival schools like Durandal, Babylon, Amrita, and Sharur. Her bloodlust now honed and her shield at the ready, she will pummel anyone who challenges her into a meaty pulp."

    89023.jpg

    leona1turn.png

    Battle Academia Wukong

    1350 RP "A consummate troublemaker and prankster, Wukong has failed out of every high school in the region, eventually washing out into Labrys as an 'enrollment of last resort'. A naturally gifted fighter in the Battle Club, he still hasn't learned discipline, and only listens to Caitlyn because she can beat him up."

    62007.jpg

    wukongturn.png

    Battle Academia Yone

    1350 RP "Yone is a brooding, quiet member of the Assassin Club, one whose morose and serious attitude belies the colossal chip on his shoulder. The bad blood between him and his brother is well known, and even speaking about it casually has been known to invoke Yone's fury-- something Caitlyn has picked up on for her own purposes."

    Teamfight Tactics Patch 11.6 Notes

    TFT_Patch_11_6_Notes_Article_Banner_v3.jpg Check out the TFT Patch 11.6 notes:

    "Welcome Fated Champions,
    After two of our biggest non-set patches, we’re turning our focus to minor nudges to maintain our balanced game state through the global competition season. We’re at a fairly balanced state, so the notes are light this time around, allowing you some extra time to cheer on your favorite competitors as we approach the Fates Championship!

    NA GROUPIE, RODGER "MINIONSRPEOPLE2" CAUDILL
    PATCH HIGHLIGHTS
    CHAMPIONS
    Tier 1
    Diana orbits back into the notes with a, *checks moon phase calendar*, buff as the moon waxes (approaches full). Despite her recent buff last patch, Diana is still getting outshined by the sun-dwelling 1 costs. We’re also buffing our favorite battle tops (see Tier 3 as well), so give Warlord a spin.
    • Diana Attack Speed: 0.65 ⇒ 0.7
    • Garen Judgement Damage: 450/675/1125 ⇒ 450/675/1250
    • Tristana Rapid Fire Attack Speed: 60/70/90% ⇒ 60/65/70%
    Tier 2
    Lulu’s been the overtime Queen for a while with a double cast CC chain plus crazy bonus health. By cutting the double cast on the same unit, we’re giving Overtime Lulu a nUrf. Sinking in win rate with the Vanguard nerf from last patch, Nautilus’ anchor will weigh him down a bit less. Vi’s armor shred is being adjusted to match our new shred debuff tiers, but we’re giving her some more punch as compensation.
    • Lulu can no longer target the same unit twice with Wild Growth in one Mage double cast
    • Nautilus Mana: 75/150 ⇒ 85/150
    • Vi Denting Blow Armor Shred: 40/60/80% ⇒ 40/50/70%
    • Vi Denting Blow Damage: 250/400/800 ⇒ 250/425/850
    • Zed Contempt for the Weak AD Steal: 20/25/30% ⇒ 30/30/30%
    Tier 3
    The forecast for tonight shows three stars, and a risk of severe Bladestorms. In other news, spinny girl Kat is getting more spin to rip through the mid-game more effectively, go ahead and let her rip.
    • Irelia Bladestorm Damage: 200/300/550 ⇒ 200/300/700
    • Katarina Death Lotus Damage: 600/900/1500 ⇒ 650/1000/1500
    Tier 4
    We stole two of these changes from the balance team in our spin off game mode, @leagueoflegends. Can you identify which two?
    • Cho’Gath Armor: 60 ⇒ 70
    • Cho’Gath Magic Resist: 40 ⇒ 60
    • Olaf Attack Damage: 90 ⇒ 85
    • Talon Attack Damage: 90 ⇒ 95
    • Talon True Strike Base Damage: 85/135/400 ⇒ 100/150/400
    Tier 5
    Yone’s got me telling my Vanguard comp, “Tanks for nothing.” But make no Mysticake, this nerf only affects him at three stars. The nerf also aligns him with our new shred debuff tiers.
    • Yone Seal Fate Armor and Magic Resist Shred: 60/60/80% ⇒ 60/60/70%
    ITEMS
    Locket has been an insane slam item that’s been scaling far too well into the late game. This nerf maintains its identity as an early game slammer, but decreases its effectiveness late game. Last Whisper has been a go to item with the rise of tanks across all regions. We’re giving it a tweak that will ultimately weaken the item.
    • Ornn’s Eternal Winter Attack Speed Slow: 50% ⇒ 35%
    • Last Whisper Armor Shred: 80% ⇒ 70%
    • Last Whisper Shred Duration: 3 ⇒ 5 seconds
    • Locket of the Iron Solari Shield: 300/375/500 ⇒ 300/350/450
    • Sunfire Cape is no longer Unique. Each Sunfire Cape on a unit will search for its own burn target every 2 seconds. Burn baby burn!
    BUGS
    • Demoted: Keeper 4 is now properly a silver trait
    • Fixed a bug where Zilean’s Rewind Fate failed to find targets if Zilean was in the Zhonya’s Paradox invulnerable state
    • Get Back Here: Darius no longer fails to deal damage with Fortune’s Guillotine if his target dashes very far away
    • Carve a path: Fixed a bug where Darius had a brief window between chain dunks where he was not unstoppable
    • Talon and Wukong’s spells will now properly proc Trap Claw’s spellshield and stun
    • Fixed a bug where Kennen’s Slicing Maelstrom would occasionally stop casting when hit by another Kennen’s Slicing Maelstrom

    Clarity in League

    01_Clarity_Banner_Sona.jpg

    Check out this dev blog on clarity in League of Legends - "Hitboxes, color palettes, silhouettes, cats, skins, and more."

    "Hi everyone, today we want to talk about game clarity in League. It’s one of those things we’re always thinking about behind the scenes, but it only really becomes noticeable when we get something wrong—like when a hitbox doesn’t match an effect or a skin is too hard to read. In a perfect world, this never happens. But with over 150 champs and 1000 skins—not to mention items, runes, and neutral objectives—we’re bound to make mistakes sometimes.
    That said, we think we can do better, which is why we’ve been putting extra effort into gameplay clarity in recent years. You’ll see this in things like champion VFX and SFX updates, but it’s also something we’re constantly thinking about during development. So today, we want to share what that looks like for champions and skins.
    But first, let’s talk about our goals.
    The Unbreakable Vows
    We see clarity as the ability to understand what’s happening in League and respond to it. Because League is highly competitive, this is obviously quite important.
    There are three major things we strive for:
    1. First and foremost, gameplay should be clearly conveyed. League’s visuals and audio should help you quickly identify and react to champions, spells, and attacks. You should also be able to generally understand mechanics just by experiencing them in game.
    2. The second goal is to always preserve hierarchy. This is a fancy way of saying that the most important thing at any given moment (like a major ultimate or CC) should draw the most attention. This means maintaining a proper hierarchy both within a champion’s kit and between champions and other gameplay elements (like item effects).
    3. Finally, noise should be kept minimal. This doesn’t just mean audio—visual noise adds up quickly and can make it difficult to react properly in teamfights. Flashiness can feel great, especially with skins, but it comes at a cost. (Exception: Spells with big gameplay effects can and should be noisy, to a degree.)
    Now let’s jump into the fun stuff, aka how we design champions with clarity in mind.
    Ults, Cats, and BFGs

    When we think about clarity for champions, there are two main considerations: silhouettes and abilities.
    Silhouettes
    Silhouettes are the single most important thing for champion recognition in League. This is basically a champion’s shadow: What do they look like shrouded in darkness?

    02_Champ_Silhouettes.jpg

    A good silhouette is one with a defining primary characteristic that’s unique to that champion: Think Senna’s gun, Diana’s moon weapon, or Yuumi… being a cat. Even when we make skins, a champion’s primary characteristic should never change.
    Silhouettes also include animation, but ideally that’s more of a bonus differentiator rather than a main one. For example, Ivern’s lanky figure stands out on its own, but his goofy walk also adds to his recognizability.

    03_Ivern_Walk.gif

    Lee Sin, on the other hand, has a fairly generic shape, so a lot of his silhouette is carried by his animations. (Which is okay, although it can complicate skin design, which we’ll talk about later.)

    04_Lee_Sin_Animation.gif

    Beyond easy recognition, a champion’s silhouette should highlight their source of power. This is especially important for new players who have to learn what 150+ champions do. If you see someone with a bow, you can assume they’ll fire arrows from a distance. A champion with a staff probably casts spells. And one with shotgun knees… shoots… you?

    05_Urgie_Knees.jpg

    The size of a champion’s silhouette can also say something about their playstyle. For example, larger champions with bulky armor are probably tanks or fighters. A tiny innocent yordle probably isn’t.

    06_Garen_Teemo.jpg

    Last but not least, it should be clear which direction a champion is facing from their silhouette alone. You should know whether someone is charging towards you or away at a glance.
    Abilities
    The second major consideration for champion clarity is their abilities. This is an area that can quickly become frustrating, particularly when hitboxes don’t line up with their effects. Over the past few years, we’ve been working to update the VFX for some of League’s older champions who aren’t hitting the bar, and we have more VFX updates planned for 2021, starting with Hecarim.
    Champion VFX Updates

    Carousel_07_Hecarim.jpg

    Hecarim’s VFX Update
    Beyond hitboxes, one of the most important things for abilities is that they follow hierarchy rules. In other words, the amount of attention an ability grabs should match its level of importance.
    How important a spell is depends on a lot of things, including…
    • How much damage does it do? Spells that do more damage should draw more attention. Zoe’s Q is an example of this done well—it’s bright, saturated, and has an audio cue ahead of time.
    • Does it CC? Spells with hard CC and/or high-duration CC should stand out. Taric’s stun is a good example—it’s bright, there’s an audio wind-up, and a well-defined hitbox.
    • Is it dodgeable? If something is dodgeable, it should draw more attention. While not a champion ability, Arcane Comet is an example of this done poorly—the big circle on the ground implies a lot more dodgeability than what’s realistic.
    • Does it have a large impact on play? Spells that drastically change how you play with or against them should be flashy. The audio and visuals and on Kayle’s ultimate are a good example—it’s bold, but the impact is high.

    12_Morgana_Hierarchy.jpg

    Beyond upholding hierarchy, there are specific gameplay considerations to a spell’s audio and visual design. Feel free to click through if you’re curious!
    Ability Considerations

    Carousel_13_Projectile.jpg

    Direction
    Projectiles should convey the direction they’re traveling, even without motion. This can often be accomplished by “blurring” the tail end of the effect.
    Filling Up Buckets
    The main clarity challenge with skins is creating something that feels meaningfully different from the base champion while ensuring they’re still recognizable. If we go too hard, then we sacrifice game clarity. But if we don’t go hard enough, it’s not going to feel satisfying.
    In a way, skin development is like filling a bucket, where each discipline—like animation, VFX, SFX, and so on—can dump some water in. Our goal is to get that bucket nice and full without overflowing it.

    19_Skins_Bucket.jpg

    How much water each discipline adds varies from skin to skin. Sometimes we focus on VFX and SFX, so we keep the model and animations closer to base. Other times we go for a full animation refresh, so we split the difference elsewhere. In the end, the complete experience should make it quick and easy to identify the champion at all times. This means we’ll never turn everything up to 11, as we’d end up with something exciting that’s seriously damaging to clarity.
    You Care About What!?
    Now that we’ve addressed the timeless struggle between coolness and clearness, let’s run through some specifics.
    Silhouettes
    A champion’s silhouette can be broken into three parts: primary, secondary, and tertiary. A champion’s primary feature should never be removed or significantly altered in any skin. We’d never give Senna a pea-shooter or turn Yuumi into a human, for example.

    20_Darius_Silhouette.jpg

    There’s a little more leeway with secondary and tertiary features, especially if a champion has a strong primary read. High Noon Senna is a great example of this: Her body’s silhouette is noticeably different from her base, but because she still has her iconic gun, she’s immediately recognizable.

    21_Base_and_High_Noon_Senna.jpg

    Champions whose silhouettes are carried through animation can be challenging to make Legendary (or Ultimate) skins for. This is because changing their animations has a greater impact on their silhouette, which adds more water to the bucket. If you add in some flashy VFX, SFX, and model changes, it’s easy to lose the champion’s identity. This is another reason why we want every new champion to have a strong primary feature.
    Abilities
    We use a champion’s base abilities as the clarity bar when designing skins. In other words... Every ability should be at least as clear as the base skin because skins should never be pay-to-win. Abilities on skins can be slightly clearer than on base, but we don’t really want anything to be pay-to-lose either, so our goal is clarity parity.

    22_Spell_Shields.png

    Established shape language should be used for skins as well, like scrolling-down lines for spell shields.

    Abilities should also maintain hierarchy and not add excess noise to the game, which means we should be intentional with the extra bells and whistles. That said, we sometimes overshoot this. We want to make the best, most exciting skins possible, and it’s a delicate balance between that and gameplay noise and hierarchy.
    In the end, our goal is to release skins that feel great with abilities that are clear even during the most chaotic teamfights. With that in mind, here’s a look at some specific changes we’ve made during development because of various clarity concerns. Peruse at your leisure!
    Changes From Development

    Carousel_23_Shan_Hai_Jhin.jpg

    Shan Hai Scrolls Jhin
    The borders of Shan Hai Scrolls Jhin’s Curtain Call originally faded out while the ult opened, making them very difficult to see during the opening sequence. We adjusted the lines so they’re always visible."
    Maps
    Now onto a few final considerations, starting with maps. Surprising no one, skins should be clear no matter which map you’re on. We haven’t always been the best at this, but these days we check every skin across all maps to make sure we don’t end up with any more Freljord Taliyahs on the Howling Abyss.

    28_Freljord_Taliyah_Clarity.jpg

    Transformations
    It’s important that any significant or lasting transformations are only be used during homeguards or other empowered states. Spirit Blossom Ahri’s fox transformation is an example of this done well—you only see her full-fox form in homeguards and human-fox form while her ult is active.
    On the other hand, near-permanent transformations like Solar and Lunar Eclipse Leona’s are something we’d like to avoid going forward. Unless you’re familiar with the skin, it’s unclear whether her glowing means she’s transformed or has Q active and is about to bop you.

    29_Solar_Eclipse_Leona.jpg

    Cosmetic Animations

    Last but not least, let’s talk about cosmetic animations, like recalls, dances, taunts, and so on. In short: None of these animations should provide a competitive advantage. This may seem obvious, but sometimes these animations get too flashy (especially when spammed) or have champions “abandoning” their hitboxes.
    Pool Party Renekton is the poster crocodile for this. Spamming his recall sure looks fun, but it’s distracting and his hitbox never changes, even as his model appears to move upward. Going forward, we have a strict rule where champions must stay in their recall circle for at least two seconds, but really, we’d like it if they stayed there all the time.

    30_Pool_Party_Renekton.gif

    The End
    That’s all we have for today! We hope our extra efforts around clarity become more noticeable with time. If there are any skins or champs you’re curious how we approached clarity for, feel free to send ‘em our way using this form.
    Thanks for reading. You’re all lovely. Goodbye!"

    Ask Riot: Legendary Skins

    Ask_Riot_Legendary_Skins.jpg

    Check out this week's Ask Riot - "How we choose champs for Legendaries, League Displays, and fighting toxicity.":

    Welcome to Ask Riot

    Today we’re talking Legendary skins, League Displays, and ridding the Rift of meanies.
    Also, please send us all your questions! One question = one hug for Amumu.
    How do you choose which champions to make a Legendary skin for?
    When selecting a champion for a Legendary skin, there's a few factors that come into play. First, Legendaries take quite a bit more time to develop than Epic skins, so we tend to prioritize champions that are pretty broadly popular.
    Next, we take a look at our big thematics of the year and start going through each one, identifying potential Legendary skin candidates based on a number of factors, including…
    • How recently a champion has received a skin: If a champion seems like a great fit but is getting another skin around that time, we’d probably pick somebody else.
    • How well they fit into the thematic: This one’s pretty obvious.
    • What their current catalog of skins looks like: We would want to avoid stacking a champion with nothing but sci-fi skins, for example. (Some overlap is okay, but we do try to diversify options.)
    • How much we could elevate the fantasy by taking a skin to the Legendary level: Does being able to change more animations, voiceover, and exploring other Legendary hooks let us tell a more exciting story for this champion?
    One other less common way we might choose a champion for a Legendary skin is by concepting a broadly appealing champion in a prospective thematic we find really exciting for them. Then if it works well, we’ll build that thematic around them—Spirit Blossom Thresh and Ahri are an example of this. We really want Legendary skins to be the best expression of a fantasy for a character and skinline, so no matter how we choose them, we want to make sure that everyone is excited about it.
    Riot DevinSage, Producer
    Could we get an update on League Displays?
    Over the years, the teams who originally launched League Displays have taken on different projects, and working actively on those projects has taken priority over maintaining League Displays. Unfortunately, that means League Displays hasn’t been kept up to date, and the bug backlog has crept up (including issues with downloading).
    We'll be doing some investigation in the coming months to see if there's a more scalable way to maintain League Displays long term or provide alternative ways to enjoy League artwork.
    Botley, Development Manager
    Is there anything we as players can actively do to help with getting rid of toxicity in the game? Apart from not being part of the problem.
    In a highly-competitive game, sometimes tempers run high or mental kabooms take place. We know this can be one of the worst experiences in League (or any game for that matter), and when it happens to you, it can make you feel helpless.
    In addition to practicing your own rock solid mental game and continuing on in relentless pursuit of victory, you should use the report button in the post game lobby and Champion Select. We've done a fair amount of work to improve the qualitative and quantitative criteria for evaluating reports over the past year, which means they're more effective at identifying problematic behavior. This coupled with ongoing improvements to how we detect and address disruptive behavior outside of reports is moving systems in the right direction, though again, we expect combating toxicity to be something we all have to stay vigilant on for as long as competitive games exist.
    If you end up leaving the post game lobby without remembering to report, we also accept reports on our support site.
    In short, stay strong and report where you see disruptive behavior.

    Riot Codebear, Senior Producer

    Have a question? Head here, drop your question in the box, and ask away."

    Mid-Patch Update Hotfixes

    A handful of hotfixes went out over the last week, here's more details from the 11.5 Patch Notes:

    "3/8/2021 Graves, Kled, and Jayce Bugfixes

    jayce.jpg

    Jayce
    • MURAMANA BUGFIX Fixed a bug where Jayce would end up with two Muramanas upon upgrading Manamune to Muramana and casting E - Acceleration Gate on an ally

    kled.jpg

    Kled

    • SKAARL GRIEVOUS WOUNDS BUGFIX Fixed a bug where remounting onto Skaarl as Kled would be affected by Grievous Wounds
    • SKAARL DISMOUNT BUGFIX Fixed a bug where Kled's dismounted health would not regenerate past the amount he was at when he remounted
    • SKAARL RESPAWN HEALTH BUGFIX Fixed a bug where Skaarl would not respawn at full health after Kled's been killed
    • GUARDIAN ANGEL BUGFIX Fixed a bug where Kled would gain Courage even while his Passive - Skaarl, the Cowardly Lizard is on cooldown as he's revived by Guardian Angel
    3/8/2021 Ranked Ladder Update
    We're disabling all Riot-created pro player accounts created after January 7th, 2021 to address unintended differences in LP gains/losses which resulted in an unfair advantage over non-pros in reaching the top of the ranked ladder. These accounts will decay out of the ladder over the next few weeks. Pro accounts created before Jan 7 are unaffected. Pros will be given replacement accounts with fixes made to the starting MMR. This update has already begun and may take a few days to complete."

    Context & Notes

    1) Here's a few updates noted on the feedback threads for the skins on the PBE this cycle:

    Battle Academia Yone

    "EDITED WITH FEEDBACK RESPONSE 9th March 2021
    Bugs & fixes:
    - SFX on E will be increased.
    - Earrings warp will be fixed. Thanks for catching that!
    Feedback:
    - Homeguards will not be added as it is not included on the Battle Academia current wave. It is out of scope for 1350 skins team. Homeguards were added in the first wave due to scope creep and we apologize for the inconsistency. Wukong's homeguard was added as a quality of life improvement on the previous skin. Hence, that is why it was maintained.
    - We understand that a lot of you loved the horns and thought it was an iconic look. Unfortunately, horns are not listed or recognized as a primary read for Yone's silhouette.
    Thanks all! See you on the rift."

    Battle Academia Wukong

    "Post PBE cycle edit:
    Hair color had been adjusted and made more saturated."

    Battle Academia Leona

    "Post PBE cycle edit:
    We adjusted her lips color to better match what you can see on the splash art."

    Battle Academia Leona Prestige Edition

    "Post PBE cycle edit:
    We adjusted hands color to make it feel more natural."

    Battle Academia Garen

    "Post PBE cycle edit:
    The team did decide to not make design changes to the skin."

    Battle Academia Caitlyn

    "UPDATE:
    During the PBE cycle we have addressed some outstanding bugs as well as addressed the feedback in regards to Battle Academia Caitlyn's walk cycle to address the concerns listed here in the thread! Thank you so much for your time in leaving the feedback and we appreciate all the notes you have given."

    Context & Notes

    1) Riot Scruffy tweeted a tentative changelist for Xin Zhao that is now testing on the PBE:

    Xin Zhao has been struggling a bit both from a power and satisfaction standpoint.

    One of our SR designers, @TheTruexy, has been working on a nice little upgrade for him. Best part is the new W->E combo (in bold).

    No release date yet, still looking for feedback.

    EvanEWLVgAM6s23.png

    He also provided a changelist for healing reduction items in 11.6:

    "Testing round 2 of systemic healing reduction for 11.6

    In some cases this will be nerfs but in others it will be shifting stats keeping power neutral

    Hopefully this is the last set of these and we can be in a good state where healing is a notable choice and not a baseline"

    MSI 2021 is Heading to Reykjavik, Iceland

    MSI is headed to Iceland! Here's an article with more information:

    "MSI is back! Read below for a preview of the venue, competition format changes, and an introduction to our newest global partner - Verizon.
    LOCATION AND VENUE DETAILS

    03_msi_2021_dual.jpg

    Location: Reykjavík, Iceland
    Venue: Laugardalshöll
    Dates: May 6-23
    We are headed to Reykjavík - the capital of Iceland - for the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational. After last year’s cancellation, we’re excited to reintroduce this major international competition and bring together the top teams from every region. The games will be played at the Laugardalshöll indoor sporting arena, where the historic “Match of the Century” 1972 World Chess Championship was held.
    Teams will quarantine upon arrival in Iceland. For the health and safety of our players, staff, and local residents, the event will not be able to accommodate a live audience.
    MSI FORMAT CHANGES
    Introducing: No more Play-Ins! All teams from all regions will now start off in the same stage of MSI. There will be three stages total.
    Stage 1: Groups - All 12 teams start here and they will split into three groups of four teams. Each of these groups will play a best-of-one, double round robin. The top two teams per group will advance to the next stage.
    Stage 2: Rumble - The six remaining teams will play another best-of-one, double round robin. The top four teams will advance to a playoff bracket.
    Stage 3: Knockout - The top four teams will advance to a single elimination, best-of-five playoff bracket, consisting of the Semifinals followed by the Finals.
    PARTNER ANNOUNCEMENT

    01_msi_2021_verizon_partnership.jpg

    We are excited to announce that Verizon will be joining LoL Esports and VALORANT global events as the official 5G wireless network provider.
    This partnership serves as the latest iteration of Verizon’s consistent support of Riot’s esports. Starting with the League Championship Series (LCS) in 2020, Verizon has provided support for LCS through original video content and in-broadcast sponsored segments. Their support extended to VALORANT First Strike: North America, the first official tournament for Riot's premier tactical shooter, as well as The Wild Rift Invitational - the world’s first Wild Rift esports event of the game featuring LCS players and celebrities.
    HOW TO WATCH
    More info including the qualified teams and broadcast schedule will be revealed at a later date!
    Follow us @lolesports and keep an eye on lolesports.com for more details to come!"

    EvanEWLVgAM6s23.png

    • He also provided some follow-up to a recent Gameplay Thoughts post on items:

    [1] Data correction on our 11.3 Item choice blog last week:

    We accidentally included ARAM/URF so the results were skewed slightly more diverse across the board.

    We said 88% of champs hit our mythic goal -> the corrected number would be 74%.

    More detailed blog coming next week.

    [2] Overall it doesn't change our goal or plans, we'll continue to try and buff/broaden underused options and reduce the power of dominant choices.

    [3] More on the Item choice correction:

    We have a dev blog with all of this coming friday, but I wanted to share early so we can have the correct info out there faster.

    This was a really unfortunate error that misrepresented the numbers, and I'm sorry for that.

    1.png2.png3.png

    [4] We intend to be as transparent and open with you about our successes, failures, and future plans. Showing wrong data certainly doesn't help our case.

    In the end we (like you all) are looking to find the best ways we can improve the future of this game we love.

    LOL_PROMOART_9-1.jpg

    Check out the Patch 11.5 Notes:

    "11.5, how time flies! Let’s spring into it.
    First: the jungle, the mighty jungle. Champs like Master Yi and Sejuani have been in a bit of a jam, while others like Udyr and Rammus have been on full tilt, rampaging around the map. We’re giving the former more of a sting, and putting on the brakes for the latter.
    Then: items! We're adding more rules to Guinsoo's Rageblade and providing clarification for its synergy with Senna. We're also helping Muramana out of its identity crisis with Essence Reaver by giving it more of a niche.
    So sharpen your stingers, buzz onto the Rift, and make a beeline down mid. See ya next patch.
    And for those of you with melissophobia (a fear of bees) you can take this portal TFT patch notes to check out the bee-free TFT scene!

    Beezahar, Yuubee, and Bee'Maw will be available on March 4th, 2021.
    Champions

    azir.jpg

    Azir
    W Sand Soldier damage decreased.
    Balancing out Azir’s steady power curve throughout the duration of a game by pecking down his early lane control.
    W - Arise!
    • SAND SOLDIER DAMAGE :: 60-160 (levels 1-18) >>> 50-150 (levels 1-18)

    gragas.jpg

    Gragas
    Q cost now flat.
    Pushing back the beefed-up top lane Gragas by increasing the ticket price on his barrels.
    Q - Barrel Roll
    • COST :: 60/65/70/75/80 mana >>> 80 mana (at all ranks)

    jax.jpg

    Jax
    Base damage growth increased.
    Jacked up Jax packs the max attacks with Trinity! (Try to say that three times fast.)
    Base Stats
    • DAMAGE GROWTH :: 3.38 >>> 4.25

    karma.jpg

    Karma
    Q cooldown decreased.
    Despite buffs in patch 11.3, support Karma is still in low spirits. We took a look at some of the more recent changes to her and are reigniting her fire by partially reverting the nerfs from 10.16.
    Q - Inner Flame
    • COOLDOWN :: 9/8.5/8/7.5/7 seconds >>> 8/7.5/7/6.5/6 seconds

    kogmaw.jpg

    Kog’Maw
    W bonus damage increased later.
    Once upon a time, when tanks and fighters only built armor Legendaries like Sunfire Cape and Randuin’s Omen, Kog’Maw was much more able to dissolve defenses. To give him more of a payoff, we’re amping up the zip in his spit so that when the ability is up, he can charge! bugle noises

    W - Bio-Arcane Barrage
    • BONUS DAMAGE :: 3/3.75/4.5/5.25/6% of target's maximum health >>> 3/4/5/6/7% of target's maximum health

    yi.jpg

    Master Yi
    E base damage increased.
    With the last set of nerfs in patch 11.1 and jungle changes, Master Yi had found himself in a tough spot. Putting the alpha in his strike to help all his builds and playstyles, especially those more reliant on attack speed.
    E - Wuju Style
    • BASE DAMAGE :: 18/26/34/42/50 >>> 20/30/40/50/60

    pyke.jpg

    Pyke
    Passive grey health storage decreased; now adds lethality and increases when enemies are nearby.
    Tamping down mid Pyke's sustain in order to bring support Pyke up from the undertow.
    Passive - Gift of the Drowned Ones
    • GREY HEALTH STORAGE :: 25-50% of damage taken (levels 1-18) >>> 10% of damage taken (+25% lethality), increased to 35% of damage taken (+50% lethality) when 2 or more enemies are nearby

    qiyana.jpg

    Qiyana
    W bonus damage increased. R damage increased later.
    Qiyana’s power tends to rely on early roams. This has shaped her to be the Elite pick of choice, where players have been able to use her roaming prowess to their full advantage without running into the coordinated safety usually seen in higher-tier games. To bring her more opportunities for royal success, we’re giving her more baseline scaling and encouraging an earlier W max. You know, for crushing.
    W - Terrashape
    • BONUS DAMAGE :: 8/16/24/32/40 (+30% AP) >>> 8/22/36/50/64 (+45% AP)
    R - Supreme Display of Talent
    • DAMAGE :: 100/170/240 >>> 100/200/300

    rammus.jpg

    Rammus
    Base health growth decreased.
    Rammus has been more armor than arma(dillo), particularly in Average levels of play. Rolling down some of his durability so he has to be more careful before barrelling into fights.
    Base Stats
    • HEALTH GROWTH :: 95 >>> 80

    rell.png

    Rell
    Base armor decreased. W1 and W2 cooldown increased.
    Rell is dominating the pro scene, so we’re giving her opponents a fighting chance by making her more vulnerable to harass.
    Base Stats
    • ARMOR :: 35 >>> 32
    W - Ferromancy: Crash Down
    • COOLDOWN :: 11 seconds >>> 13 seconds
    W - Ferromancy: Mount Up
    • COOLDOWN :: 11 seconds >>> 13 seconds

    samira.png

    Samira
    Base damage growth increased. Q damage ratio increased later.
    Samira is struggling to keep up after her nerfs last patch, so we’re upping this thrillseeker’s scaling so that she can continue to slay when late game rolls around.
    Base Stats
    • DAMAGE GROWTH :: 2.3 >>> 3
    Q - Flair
    • DAMAGE RATIO :: 80/87.5/95/102.5/110% >>> 80/90/100/110/120%

    sejuani.jpg

    Sejuani
    W second hit damage ratio increased.
    Sejuani has been bristling in the new jungle. We’re giving her and her boar an extra juicy treat for hitting both parts of her W.
    W - Winter’s Wrath
    • SECOND HIT DAMAGE RATIO :: 5.25% of Sejuani’s maximum health >>> 6% of Sejuani’s maximum health

    seraphine.png

    Seraphine
    Passive subsequent note damage decay removed; Note damage from allies reduced. R cooldown increased.
    Seraphine’s still all over our radars and radios, so we’re softening the blow from the Notes coming from allies, while turning up the power on her own Notes. This way, she can continue to be impactful on her own without over-amplifying through the strength of her fans.
    Passive - Stage Presence
    • [REM] SUBSEQUENT NOTE DAMAGE DECAY :: Seraphine's Notes no longer decay in damage to non-minions
    • [NEW] BACKUP VOCALS… BACK UP :: Notes from allies now only deal 25% damage of Seraphine’s Note damage to all targets, including minions
    • NOTE DAMAGE :: 4-16 (levels 1-18) >>> 4/8/14/24 (levels 1/6/11/16)
    R - Encore
    • COOLDOWN :: 160/140/120 seconds >>> 180/150/120 seconds

    shaco.jpg

    Shaco
    W base damage and single target base damage decreased; now deals increased damage to monsters.
    Shaco has been spooking the bejeezus out of bot lane but he’s been clowning around in the jungle, so we’re adjusting accordingly.
    W - Jack in the Box
    • BASE DAMAGE :: 15/20/25/30/35 >>> 10/15/20/25/30
    • SINGLE TARGET BASE DAMAGE :: 35/50/65/80/95 >>> 25/40/55/70/85
    • [NEW] POP GOES THE MONSTER :: Jack in the Box now deals an additional 10/20/30/40/50 damage to monsters

    trundle.png

    Trundle
    Q cooldown decreased.
    We’re helping the troll king sink his teeth into the new season with a little extra bite in top and jungle.
    Q - Chomp
    • COOLDOWN :: 4 seconds >>> 3.5 seconds

    twitch.jpg

    Twitch
    Passive damage ratio per stack decreased. R bonus damage increased; duration increased.
    AP rat is strong, AD rat feels wrong. Recalibrating.
    Passive - Deadly Venom
    • DAMAGE RATIO PER STACK :: 3% AP >>> 2.5% AP
    R - Spray and Pray
    • BONUS DAMAGE :: 25/40/55 >>> 30/45/60
    • DURATION :: 5 seconds >>> 6 seconds

    udyr.jpg

    Udyr
    Base health growth decreased. R aura total damage decreased.
    With the help of new items like Turbo Chemtank, Udyr has been zooming around the jungle with nary a care with some of the fastest movement speeds we've ever seen, letting him nyoom in and out of fights. We’re dialing back his clear speeds (revert of a 10.21 buff) and making him squishier.
    Base Stats
    • HEALTH GROWTH :: 99 >>> 92
    R - Phoenix Stance
    • AURA TOTAL DAMAGE :: 50/95/140/185/230/275 over 4 seconds >>> 40/80/120/160/200/240 over 4 seconds

    viego.jpg

    Viego
    Fixed several bugs related to Mejai’s and Possession. Passive turret dodging removed.
    After tinkering with Viego for a while, we’ve pulled together a few significant bugfixes that should add up to a slight nerf.
    General
    • MEJAI’S BUGFIX :: Viego no longer loses stacks on Mejai’s Soulstealer and Dark Seal when possessing an enemy, and now gains the Mejai’s and Dark Seal’s stacks of enemies he possesses
    • TOO FAR BUGFIX :: Fixed a bug where Viego could sometimes possess an enemy soul from extreme ranges if cast right at the start of another possession
    • TOO SOON BUGFIX :: Fixed a bug where Viego would sometimes instantly possess souls without the 1 second cast time
    Passive - Sovereign’s Domination
    • [REM] TURRET DODGING :: Viego no longer dodges turret shots that are in the air when he starts the possession animation
    Items

    Muramana
    Muramana heavily overlaps with Essence Reaver, both in stats and use cases. To better differentiate between the two, we’re changing Muramana’s proc to focus more on empowering abilities, whereas Essence Reaver empowers auto attacks through abilities.
    • SHOCK :: Basic attacks and abilities deal 2.5% max mana as bonus damage against champions >>> Basic attacks deal 1.5% max mana as bonus damage. Melee abilities deal 3.5% max mana as bonus damage and ranged abilities deal 2.7% max mana as bonus damage; all abilities also deal +6% total AD as bonus damage against champions (on-hit attacks that trigger spell effects count as abilities for this purpose)
    • SHOCK BUGFIX :: Fixed a bug where damaging abilities would proc Shock's bonus damage once per ability, and should now only proc once per champion per ability
    Stridebreaker
    Stridebreaker's dash didn’t feel as powerful as its slash, so we’re balancing both while aiming for a power-neutral change.
    • HALTING SLASH DASH RANGE :: 200 >>> 300
    • HALTING SLASH DASH SPEED :: Slightly increased
    • HALTING SLASH SLOW DECAY :: 60% over 2 seconds >>> 40% over 2 seconds
    • DAMAGE :: 100% AD >>> 75% AD
    Guinsoo’s Rageblade
    Certain champions, like Senna, benefit too much from Guinsoo’s Rageblade when you consider the fact that its crit strike chance can scale over 100% and it ignores crit damage modifiers. We’re adding some rules to it to circumvent these edge cases, allow for more item diversity with those champions, and help us better tune the item to be usable for more of the roster.
    Speaking of Senna, now, her passive can no longer give her above 100% crit strike chance, and any excess crit is converted into lifesteal at the same rate.
    • [UPD] WRATH :: Convert every 1% critical strike chance into 2 bonus physical damage on-hit, with a maximum of 100% critical strike chance. Wrath’s on-hit damage conversion is now affected by critical strike damage modifiers.
    Serpent’s Fang
    Serpent’s Fang is a powerful but underwhelming and confusing item, so we're making it more broadly usable. Imagine Grievous Wounds for shields, but with extra profits!
    • [UPD] SHIELD REAVER :: Dealing damage to an enemy champion reduces any shields they gain by 50% for melee champions and 25% for ranged champions for the next three seconds. When you damage an enemy who is unaffected by Shield Reaver, reduce all shields on them by 50% for melee champions and 25% for ranged champions.
    • ON-HIT ITEM BUGFIX :: Fixed a bug where Serpent's Fang's Shield Reaver passive would not reduce an enemy's shields if the user had any on-hit items equipped
    Maw of Malmortius
    Dropping Maw's price to be a more attractive and affordable defensive option.
    • TOTAL COST :: 3100 gold >>> 2800 gold
    Black Cleaver
    Adjusting Black Cleaver to be better suited for longer fights while packing it with more punch for its cost.
    • TOTAL COST :: 3300 gold >>> 3100 gold
    • HEALTH :: 300 >>> 400
    • [REM] BUTCHER :: Black Cleaver no longer deals bonus physical damage
    • [NEW] RAGE :: Dealing physical damage to a champion grants 5 movement speed per stack of Carve on them for 2 seconds
    In-Game Shop Updates
    • The shop continued to assimilate knowledge at an alarming rate and has reached a new level of awareness. (It keeps asking us to nerf Ornn.)
    • Introducing Starter Bundles: The recommended view will now offer you the most popular combination of items players start with instead of just the first item. (Hint: It's usually potions.) Saved you some clicks!
    • The font rendering has been improved in the item and search detail views. It was LiTeRaLy UnPlAyAbLe, but now it's fixed.
    • Additional bug fixes and performance improvements. Added 2 HP to the shop to round the number off.
    • Shureyla's Battlesong now properly appears in the Item Shop when filtering for "Ability Power" or "Mana & Regeneration"
    Bugfixes/QoL Changes
    • LEAGUE CLIENT: Discovered and fixed an issue that would cause players to be stuck at the "Waiting for Stats" screen instead of directing the player to their end-of-game lobby
    • LEAGUE CLIENT: Fixed various rendering issues around the Match History graphs and statistics
    • LEAGUE CLIENT: Fixed a bug that sometimes prevented players from trading champions in Champ Select
    • Heartseeker Quinn's recall SFX now play properly
    • Camille's W - Tactical Sweep heal now properly takes into account her outer cone bonus damage, not the inner cone damage
    • Fixed a bug where Tryndamere would be able to die through his R - Undying Rage if hit with a CC ability empowered by Horizon Focus
    • Bonus damage from Muramana and Ravenous Hydra's Cleave passive now properly triggers with every attack after Urgot's W - Purge is activated, not just the first attack
    • Ranged champions now properly benefit from Doran's Shield's Endure and Recovery passives
    • Fixed a bug where Udyr was able to trigger Tear of the Goddess' mana charge with every attack
    • Fixed a bug where Runaan's Hurricane's bolts would generate additional stacks of Conqueror
    • Certain champions now properly receive experience when a dragon is defeated during the time they are untargetable through an ability (Master Yi, Xayah, Zed, Kayn, Maokai, Yuumi)
    • Ravenous Hydra's Cleave passive now behaves more consistently across similar abilities
    • Fixed a bug where Ezreal would not trigger Runaan's Hurricane when casting Q - Mystic Shot and turning around at the same time
    • Fixed a bug where if Shyvana's W - Burnout was active, Ravenous Hydra's Cleave passive would not work after the first attack
    • Relic Shield's Spoils of War kills from a support now properly count towards Viktor's Passive - Glorious Evolution and Cull stacks
    • Samira's R - Infernal Trigger now properly applies Ravenous Hydra's Cleave passive

    Teamfight Tactics Patch 11.5 Notes

    Copy_of_Lulu_00_Base.jpg

    Check out the TFT Patch 11.5 notes:

    "Hey Party People,
    Now that the dust has settled after the mid-mid-set set (sound it out y’all), we’re back to tone down the stronger comps and give lift to underperforming comps via champion tweaks. Because most World’s qualifying events will be played on this patch, we have a sizable amount of changes that are more conservative in their nature. We’re trying not to (re)mix things up as much as the last patch. But, if you’re looking for some more reading, and rhymes, be sure to check out the B-patch we shipped last week with tweaks to Nidalee, Nasus, and Olaf.

    PATCH HIGHLIGHTS

    TFT_Patch_11_5_Highlights_Twitter-updated.png

    SYSTEM CHANGES
    TFT Debuff Overhaul
    "Most debuffs in TFT are now part of a shared system. If an effect applies an already-active debuff on a champion, such as multiple instances of an Armor Shred, the strongest debuff will have priority for its duration. Once the strongest debuff has worn off, if there is a weaker debuff of the same type that would have lasted longer, this debuff will continue for the difference of the two’s duration.
    Okay, but why? Since you asked, this prevents weird combos of champions/items that would make enemies get -100% Armor, Attack Speed, etc. But also, this change allows players to understand the debuffs at the same pace of our game, which is... pretty fast. Finally, it creates a standard debuff system that we can reference in the future, opening up more unique champion kits for *set 5 spoiler redacted*.
    • Debuffs of the same type no longer stack together.
    • In events where multiple debuffs of the same type occur on the same unit, the strongest will become the priority debuff for its duration.
    Chosen Odds
    Because we upped the chance of getting a Chosen last patch, folks are hitting 4-costs Chosens too frequently at level 7. They’re supposed to be a high-roll, so we’re bringing it back to being a high-roll.
    • Level 7 Roll Odds: : 0/40/55/5/0% ⇒ 0/40/58/2/0%
    TRAITS

    The OP Sleeper has now been put to sleep. The less sleepy OP trait, has also been put to rest. While the text here is dramatic, the nerfs actually aren’t.
    • Keeper Shield Amount: 150/200/275 ⇒ 150/200/250
    • Vanguard Armor: 100/250/500/1000 ⇒ 100/250/500/800
    • Vanguard Magic Resist: 20/40/70/100 ⇒ 10/25/50/80
    CHAMPIONS

    Tier 1
    Pretty sure Diana has to be in every patch to fulfill the Lunar Phases fantasy flavor. Other one costs are getting slight buffs to give weaker comps a little love.
    • Diana Pale Cascade Shield Amount: 175/250/350 ⇒ 200/300/450
    • Nasus Wither damage: 350/550/750 ⇒ 350/550/850
    • Nidalee Mana: 0/70 ⇒ 0/60
    • Yasuo Striking Steel Attack Damage Ratio: 180/185/190% ⇒ 190/200/210%
    Tier 2
    Lulu go brrrrrrr.
    • Janna Eye of the Storm Shield Amount: 250/300/400 ⇒ 250/275/350
    • Lulu Mana: 80/150 ⇒ 75/140
    Tier 3
    Making Veigar’s damage a bit taller to allow him to ride the Carry-Go-Round at the carnival.
    • Akali Five Point Strike Damage: 175/250/400 ⇒ 200/275/450
    • Sivir On the Hunt Bonus Attack Damage: 100/200/400 ⇒ 100/200/350
    • Veigar Dark Blossom Damage: 450/600/900 ⇒ 500/650/1000
    Tier 4
    The Aurelion Sol change allows Trap Claw to stop his second cast. Other than that, this change doesn’t impact him much. I guess you could say, “It’s a Trap… claw!” Morgana hasn’t been shredding Magic Resist for a while now, yet the tooltip still torments us. Sejuani has been a champion you can throw into almost any comp, so we’re giving her stun duration a soft bOink.
    • Aurelion Sol with Mage trait activated now casts his 2nd cast 0.1 seconds later
    • Morgana: Removed the Magic Resist Shred from her tooltip
    • Sejuani Firecracker Stun Duration: 2.5/3/6 ⇒ 2/2.5/8 seconds
    Tier 5
    Samira is a monster with Deathblade, but lacks the ability to pull the trigger without it. With these changes we hope to open up her buildpaths while also giving her some baseline power when she’s got nothing.
    • Samira Inferno Trigger now deals base physical damage in addition to a percentage of her Attack Damage
    • Samira Inferno Trigger Damage: 0/0/0 ⇒ 15/25/40
    • Samira Inferno Trigger Attack Damage % scaling: 50/60/80% ⇒ 30/40/60%
    • Yone Unforgotten Mana Cost: 20 ⇒ 10
    ITEMS
    • Deathblade Starting Stacks: 4 ⇒ 3
    • Statikk Shiv Damage: 60 ⇒ 65
    • Trap Claw’s missile now travels significantly faster. You heard it here second folks, Trap Claw now counters Aurelion Sol.
    USER EXPERIENCE (UX) IMPROVEMENTS
    The first two changes in this list actually dropped last patch, but they’re here now for you to say, “Oh, I remember that annoyance.” The disabled shop during carousel change shipped early in 11.4B, after originally being scheduled for this patch. The “accident” occurred moments after one of our engineers mistakenly bought the wrong unit in a ranked game.
    • Disabled the SELL hotkey on PC in Round 1. No more selling your only unit by accident and losing to minions, even though they’re people too, so there’s really no shame in doing so.
    • Excluded Target Dummy from army interfaces both in game and at the end game screen.
    • The shop is now properly disabled during carousel rounds, preventing accidental buys when your Little Legends is hopping in and out of portals.
    BUGS
    • Jarvan IV now correctly casts his spell when re-casting on the same target with mage cap
    • When multiple copies of Kalista are on the board, they will no longer fail to execute a target if the Kalista that landed the first spear dies
    • Fixed a bug where Galio would sometimes not land on the largest cluster. This sometimes happened when a target was pulled by Aatrox. Galio would determine that the target would be pulled into a large cluster and choose to land on that target, but if Aatrox’s animation wasn’t finished he would pick the target’s starting position as his landing spot and not land on the large cluster
    • Fixed a bug where Tryndamere’s Spinning Slash damage could benefit from the basic attack damage bonus
    • Fixed a bug where Runaan’s Hurricane was consuming a stack of Tryndamere’s Spinning Slash attack damage bonus to deal bonus damage
    • Fixed a bug where, when a player surrendered with a champion holding a trait item, the champion could be re-acquired from the shop or carousel and still have all their items on them
    • Choncc will now, once again, Belly Bop.
    • We are aware of a bug, reported as error #11141, with the player Bertasaurus and are working on a balance change for the competitive scene"

    Ask Riot: I Want More Bans

    New_Ask_Riot_Banner_Bans.jpg

    Here's this week's Ask Riot - "Bot lane diversity, bans in Champion Select, and the delicious flavor of health pots."

    "Welcome to Ask Riot
    This week, we’re talking bans, pots, and bots.
    Also, please send us all your questions! Every question submitted brings Nami one swim closer to Moonstones. (This isn’t canon. My words have no power.
    Can you add more bans to champ select please?
    Bans are a valuable way for every player to have a choice and some control over stopping a particularly bad matchup or champion that they believe is too strong. Players sometimes (like right now!) ask if we could increase the numbers of bans in each game. When we look at the tradeoffs of going from 10 bans to say 20 (2 bans per person), it seems like we’d get more overall drawbacks than gains. Here’s how we’re thinking about it:
    Plus sides to increasing bans:
    • More agency and control over frustrating or particularly bad matchups
    • Small strategy increases: Building a sharp team comp and considering the counters in ban choices adds some depth to the pregame
    Downsides to increasing bans:
    • Increased complexity and duration of champion select: We already have a fairly long and complex pregame, and we would rather get players into the game quicker with less possibility for restarts.
    • Reduced ability to play who you want: One of the direct tradeoffs between banning difficult or frustrating matchups is that the champ you wanted to play may get banned. This can be especially devastating for newer players who only feel comfortable on a small number of champions or players who main champions or classes who tend to be banned out more (ex: assassins).
    • Disastrous edge cases: Many of our positions and champion classes could be completely banned out with more bans. We think overall it would be bad for the game if all marksmen, enchanters, assassins, or tanks were unable to be played.
    Back when we increased the number of bans from 6 to 10, we felt there was clear positive net value. Complexity of Champ Select actually went down, and we moved up to a sweet spot of “every player gets 1 ban.” It didn’t put any classes at risk of being totally banned out while still increasing the overall level of player choice.

    Returning to the question, increasing the number of bans in League today feels more heavily weighted towards the negatives. But like everything, we will continue to reevaluate and our opinion may change in the future.

    Riot Scruffy, Game Design Director

    What does a health pot taste like? Is it even ingested? Champs seem to drink them instantly whether in battle or on their way to lane.
    From an in-world, Runeterran perspective, I suppose we actually know very little about what the League of Legends MOBA item might represent. I’m fairly sure there isn’t a factory somewhere churning out hundreds of identical potions and elixirs, and marketing them across the known world—and also, would a teenage human like Ekko respond in the same way to the same drink as an immortal god-warrior like Nasus, or a towering petricite statue like Galio?
    It would probably make sense that it’s more of a catch-all term for “anything that a person might consume, in order to heal themselves,” whether that’s magical or mundane. And as you pointed out, can we be sure that they drink it? Maybe they just rub it on their wounds or something… although that might take even longer…
    As you can probably tell, I’m trying to avoid saying that I don’t actually know! But whenever I’m getting my butt handed to me in a game of LoL (which is most of the time), I always imagine it tasting like a sweet fruit punch.
    The alternative would be that it tastes like the most revolting medicine you can think of—but that’s no fun for anyone.

    Riot Scathlocke, Narrative Editorial Director

    Why isn't botlane variety more of an issue, e.g., why do marksmen and only marksmen go bot?
    This is an interesting question where perception often has a tough time meeting reality. Some of the highest win rate champions in bot lane are not marksmen—like Swain, Karthus, and Heimderinger. Additionally, multiple mages’ highest win rates are in bot lane—like Veigar, Seraphine, and Ziggs. So the answer isn't just about systemic factors that influence who can go bot, but why it feels like only marksmen belong there.
    That of course begs the question, why do players feel that way? To a large extent, it’s social pressure. Marksmen in bot lane have been the overall dominating meta for years, so it can feel very daunting to go off-meta in Champion Select. On top of that, the duo lane requires both players to have a good understanding of each others’ moment-to-moment goals, and playing with unfamiliar champions adds to the difficulty. Finally, the statement itself is a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy—if people hear that only marksmen go bot, then they'll reinforce that social standard every time it’s challenged.
    Changes in Pro play definitely reshape this opinion, as the recent advent of Seraphine bot as a viable competitive strategy has increased her pick rate bot lane in solo queue as well. “Fasting Senna” has also proven that there are unorthodox bot lane picks that can succeed. I’m sure we’ll see more meta-breakers in the future.

    Race to the Top: What it Takes to Hit Challenger First

    2_23_21_VALGameChangers_Article_Banner2.jpg

    Check out this article from MinionsRPeople2 - "An interview with the first player to reach Challenger during the Festival of Beasts."

    "For the first time in TFT history, Challenger unlocked with the release of the mid-set, Festival of Beasts. So when the mid-set patch dropped on January 21st, players raced to be the first to Challenger in their region. During the weeks leading up to the Festival of Beasts, players entered competitions such as Common.gg’s “Race to Challenger” to claim their spot as the first to the top.
    And because the first only happens once (a set), we took the time to ask the Festival of Beasts' first to Challenger in North America, Coralie, about her success in the race.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Coralie, thanks for taking the time to chat with me, mind giving yourself an introduction and maybe telling us who your favorite Little Legend is?
    CORALIE: Sure! Hiya! I'm Coralie (she/her) and am the first player to hit Challenger in set 4.5! I've had a history of adapting to patches really quickly and finding the strongest comps. I decided to play to that advantage and put that to the test with the start of a new set. Right now, my favorite Little Legend is Umbra, probably because I used it the entire race and love the guitar riff.

    2_25_21_RacetotheTop_Article_TFT_Asset1.jpg

    A NUMBRA OF UMBRA CONCEPTS WE THUMBRA’D THROUGH BEFORE LANDING ON OUR FINAL VARIANTS.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: That guitar riff is pretty great. I know you’ve been playing TFT since the very beginning. What got you into TFT?
    CORALIE: When TFT came out I was immediately interested. I've been playing League of Legends since season three, so I was already invested in the champions. I've always liked theory crafting in League and playing off meta builds. I felt like TFT gave me that avenue to use my theory crafting skills in a universe that I enjoyed. TFT is also much more strategic and less mechanic intensive, which I prefer.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: So have you always played ranked on TFT?
    CORALIE: Yes, I played a decent amount of Normals at the start, and then I started playing Ranked just to see how I would do, and I did fairly well. And then I'd go back and play Normals with friends, and Normals wouldn't do it for me 'cause the game was too easy, in my opinion. I was winning with stuff I know should be losing, 'cause I think in Normals for somebody that's high skill, you can just win with any comp in the game, just straight up through econ. So I stopped playing Normals all together 'cause I didn't have fun with it and just decided to play Ranked.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Have you always been a high rank?
    CORALIE: So in set 1... I think I finished D1, I didn't play a whole lot, and then every set after that, I finished or hit Masters, but I've increased my LP each set.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: And so set 4.5, was the first set that you hit Challenger,?
    CORALIE: It’s the first set I hit Grandmasters as well.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Wow. So then set 4.5 rolls around and how many hours go by until you reach Challenger?
    CORALIE: 29 hours.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Holy moly. How’d you do it?
    CORALIE: Well, I took off the day of work before, so I could actually get some sleep this time, 'cause I did race in set 4... It was a race from Iron to Masters, and at the end of the first day I think everyone finished around Plat or something, and I finished at the end of the day of rank 3. I never quite got to rank 1, I think I was 50 LP behind. But I was doing very well and I figured out the meta very quickly, but then I went to sleep that day because I came straight from work to playing, which ended up being like 36 hours without sleep. But for this set, I knew if I got some sleep, maybe I could do it.
    I put in a lot of work beforehand, theory crafting what comps I thought would be good, so I had several strategies ready. But I didn't actually play PBE until three days before it went live, when I knew there wouldn't be any more changes 'cause I didn't wanna get the wrong impression, or build bad habits. I did play in a bunch of in-houses that Robinsongz invited me to, and so I got some good practice in there and found what was good that way.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: So three days of playing on PBE, early theorycrafting, and sleep — and it’s those three things that helped you do the Challenger run in 29 hours?
    CORALIE: Pretty much.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Can we dive deeper into the theorycrafting and strategy that you did right before the 29 hours?
    CORALIE: Yeah, so it was mostly during the first five games I was playing on live too, that I actually figured out what the strengths were of the comps I wanted to run. The two comps I noted that I thought were underrated, that could be strong, were Sivir and Rakan. But Rakan was hard to tell how strong he was, and I think Rakan was overlooked because most people just look at damage dealers—they're looking for who their carry will be.
    So while other people are looking for their big four-cost carries, all I wanted to do is play a strong level seven board, and consistently top four off of that.

    2_25_21_RacetotheTop_Article_TFT_Banner.jpg

    A TWO COST WITH THE ABILITY TO DISARM, TAUNT, AND SHIELD HIMSELF AGAINST INCOMING DAMAGE. AND THAT’S NOT EVEN MENTIONING HIS CAPE!
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Why’s that?
    CORALIE: Well, I noted in the Chosen changes at level six that you can no longer get a one-cost Chosen. So my thought was, every game at 3-2, I just roll it down, find a strong Chosen 'cause I'm basically guaranteed one, and I am loss streaking prior, so that I had 50, 60 gold to roll on 3-2 and guarantee a strong board that I could just coast a top four off of.
    And that's where my favorite comp comes from, because there were so many 2- and 3-cost Chosens that can work into that strategy. And you’re guaranteed a win streak once you make the transition because other players are still waiting to roll down at level eight.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: So you’re focused on having a strong mid-game board, is that what you work your theorycrafting around?
    CORALIE: Yeah, ‘cause I knew that's where people would probably be the weakest. Every game you're going to play mid game, but if you play your early game or mid game bad, your late game transition doesn't matter 'cause you've probably already lost. And I think late game transitions are a bit harder because as we see now, carries need pretty specific items and units around them to be successful. So while people are still trying to figure that out, you can just win with a mid-game board.
    And with that in mind, Elderwood is a perfect fit because at stage 3, rolling down, I could get a Chosen that I would keep to the end of the game in over 90% of my games, just because any Elderwood would work, or any Mage as well. You're not getting the one cost Chosens—you're getting just the two- and three-cost carries that you can just build the comp around, and you could afford to be greedy when you had a bunch of gold.
    And the other thing is because people have those weak mid-game boards, ever since they increased the damage in stage 3, you can really punish people, 'cause all of my wins were like five, six unit wins, so nobody else could afford to greed to eight, 'cause everyone was just losing too much health.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Wow, so aside from looking at how strong Rakan was during the PBE days and the days before the 29-hour run, were there any other flags that popped up for you when one-tricking this Elderwood comp?
    CORALIE: I don't think so, because I didn't plan on one-tricking—I just found out quickly how overtuned Rakan was, along with how guaranteed it was to get a Chosen that fit my comp. And I kind of realized as I was hitting the 12-hour mark and still climbing that if I'm gonna go all the way, I could do it in 30-ish hours. But, at some point, I'm just not gonna be able to make the transitions late game because I’m going to be too tired in the roll downs and miss units. So instead of focusing on learning, all transitions and all pivots, I could master this one comp and variations of it

    2_25_21_RacetotheTop_Article_TFT_Asset2%2B%25281%2529.jpg

    A CAPTURE OF THE TEAM COMP IN THE SECOND TO LAST GAME BEFORE CORALIE REACHED CHALLENGER.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: So not just with your climb to Challenger, but also right now, what tips do you have for players who are adapting to a game that is continuously changing?
    CORALIE: I think there's two different thoughts on how you can be better at this game. For people like me, I know my biggest advantage is always on patch day. I normally climb on patch day, and then the second week of a patch, I normally don't climb anymore. If anything, I'll drop a bit or I'll just stay stagnant depending on how much I play. Cause I know I'm quick, I can read patch notes and I can pick stuff out that's strong or whatnot. I don't play on PBE, but I just follow what the notes are. I'm pretty good at that.
    And then, there's other people that are better once a comp is figured out. They're a lot better at copy pasting and they have good skills, they just play the comp better, and they climb that way as well, but I think the biggest advantage is definitely when you can find what's strong first.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Okay, so we're in the future. The new set is upon us. What are you doing right before it? Are you changing any of your game plans and your meta strategies or are you gonna keep it the same?
    CORALIE: I think it depends on how the meta of this set ends, 'cause that was part of the reason why I was happy to play the aggressive early mid game and rolled down a lot at 3-2. ‘Cause a lot of people are just gonna default to their tendencies of what worked for them before, and I knew that I could punish that with a 3-2 power spike.A lot of my strategy will come into play based upon the end of this set, but also what set five looks like. So what will set 5 look like?
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Well...
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: So TFT is a game that's always being solved as the devs are changing the rules. How would you change the rules for TFT right now?
    CORALIE: There's a lot of different ways to change the game, but at the same time, it's hard to... Because I don't have the ability to test what these changes would do, I can theorize what a lot would be... but at the end of the day they could just fail. And I think right now, the game’s in a spot where it's kind of hard to determine what the best path is. I like some of the testing that they're doing on PBE right now with Chosens... then the problem becomes finding the correct percentages of what costs show up.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Switching gears a bit, but do you have any plans to enter the competitive scene or go pro?
    CORALIE: Not currently, I don't think I'm quite there yet. I'd have to play more consistently to stay up in Challenger, and for the most part, that’s a full-time job. Cause most at the top are streamers and play full-time and I don't have that time to put in... Since I hit Challenger my LP has been pretty stagnant, 'cause I went back to working... I haven't had the time to play. I've also had a few internet issues lately, so it's like I can't commit to keep up the climb, and I one-tricked to make it to Challenger as fast as possible.
    Now I have to find the time to learn the game in other ways, as it’s constantly changing. But that’s also how I enjoy playing it, being flexible and whatnot, 'cause I don't enjoy one-tricking all the time. So right now, no aspirations to actually go pro, but I will start looking at more stuff like the Giant Slayer fight nights, signing up for stuff like that, just small tournaments that are in the scene.
    But I did play in the set 3.5 TFT Guardian Angels League, which is an all-women’s group that I competed in. They had weekly tournaments, and I had a lot of fun competing there, but the bracket was smaller. The league is not currently active right now, but now that I'm confident in my skill, that I can compete with the best players and whatnot, I feel comfortable signing up for other tournaments and am not worried about just going 8th every game and not enjoying myself.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Hey sometimes, 8th happens.
    CORALIE: Yeah, especially when you're playing a four-game tournament. There were tournaments in Guardian Angel that I played in where... I didn't make it out of qualifiers 'cause there was a two-game qualifier, most points advanced, and back then, when the openers were a lot more varied, you could just lose off your first few rounds. The openers now are more consistent, but some of those openers back then are like, alright, well, I'm probably playing for a fourth at best.
    MINIONSRPEOPLE2: Well let’s hope for more top fours in the future. For now, I would like to thank you for your great insights throughout our conversations. And finally, where can folks follow you, watch your stream, and get more TFT insights?
    CORALIE: Right now, I can be found at twitch.tv/colrux. I streamed the entire 29-hour climb there, which was the second time I've ever streamed. But I am looking to stream more now that I've had a lot of people reach out. My hours are limited ‘cause I am working a full-time job, but I’m tentatively looking at Thursday/Saturday nights. I always enjoy sharing my thought process during the climb and answering questions for all those that came out to support the stream! So feel free to stop on by!
